Most money sent from Liberia to Ghana arrives as MTN Mobile Money, though cash pickup and bank deposit also work, and Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money are options too. Mobile money is usually the fastest, often landing within minutes, because both verified operators can pay straight to a wallet. Both send in person from a commercial-bank branch in Liberia, so you complete the transfer at the counter with ID. Liberia uses both the Liberian dollar and the US dollar, so you may pay in either. The upfront fee is only part of the cost. What really decides how many cedi arrive is the margin added to the exchange rate, so compare the amount that actually reaches the recipient, not just the fee.

01

Why Liberia to Ghana shows no live prices yet

Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Liberia, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it, much of it between neighbours in West Africa.

Outbound transfers from Liberia also go through a licensed money-transfer operator at a commercial bank. Until we can pull live Liberia rates, this page lists the operators verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote, and confirm the rate, fee and limits at the branch before you commit.

02

How the money reaches Ghana

Most transfers into Ghana land in a mobile wallet, usually MTN Mobile Money, and also Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money. Both verified operators can pay to a wallet, and the money is usually spendable within minutes. Cash pickup and bank deposit are also available, and the money arrives in Ghanaian cedi.

Mobile wallet — paid to the recipient's MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo number, then spendable or cashed out at an agent
Usually minutes
Cash pickup — collected at an agent with the recipient's ID and the reference number
Usually minutes
Bank deposit — recipient's name, bank and account number
Hours to a few business days

For a mobile wallet, you need the recipient's number registered in their own name. For cash, they collect with a government photo ID and the reference number. For a bank deposit, you'll need their full name, bank and account number. Both operators send from a commercial-bank branch in Liberia, so you complete the transfer in person.

03

What sending money to Ghana really costs

The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.

01

The exchange-rate margin

Operators usually add a percentage to the mid-market rate on the way to the cedi. On a larger transfer this margin can outweigh the upfront fee, so compare the cedi that actually arrive across both operators.

02

Liberia's dual currency

Liberia uses both the Liberian dollar and the US dollar day to day. If you pay in US dollars, the conversion has one fewer step; if you pay in Liberian dollars, it is converted first. Either way, check the rate you are actually offered before you send.

03

Cash and mobile-network pricing

Agent cash and mobile-money networks avoid intermediary-bank charges but can carry a wider rate margin, and a payout wallet or agent may add its own cash-out fee at the far end. Check the total cost, not just the counter fee.

04

Rules on each side

Sending from Liberia

Cross-border transfers from Liberia go through a licensed money-transfer operator at a commercial bank, under Central Bank of Liberia regulation. You'll need identification to send, and there are reporting rules on larger amounts and on carrying cash across the border. Use a regulated operator rather than an informal money changer, and confirm the current requirements before you send.

Receiving in Ghana

Payouts are handled by operators and mobile-money providers regulated by the Bank of Ghana. Personal remittances received from abroad are not treated as taxable income. MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo set per-transaction and daily wallet limits and update them from time to time, so a very large transfer may need to go to a bank account instead of a wallet. Check the current limits with the provider before sending a large amount.

05

Funding your transfer without overpaying

Because both operators send from a commercial-bank branch in Liberia, you'll usually fund the transfer with cash at the counter, in US or Liberian dollars. If a branch offers to take a card, check first how your bank treats it. Some issuers process a money-transfer payment as a cash advance, which can add a one-off fee and interest from day one, quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive.

06

Scams to watch on this route

The most common traps target the recipient in Ghana, where mobile-money fraud is common. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.

The fake reversal message

Rule: a forged text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real wallet balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.

PIN and OTP requests

Rule: to receive money into an MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo wallet, the recipient never enters a PIN or shares a one-time code. Anyone asking for a PIN or code to "release" a payment is a fraudster.

Fake agent or staff calls

Rule: nobody from the mobile network or the operator ever needs the wallet PIN to "help", "upgrade" or "reverse" a transfer. Never share it, and cash out only at a registered agent.

Confirm before you send

Rule: check the recipient's wallet number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use a verified operator rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.

07

How most people send money from Liberia to Ghana

Takeaway

For most people, the simplest route is Western Union or MoneyGram paying out to an MTN wallet, sent in person at a commercial bank in Liberia with ID. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, treat this page as a vetted shortlist, then judge each option by the cedi that actually arrive after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's details before you send.

Liberia to Ghana transfers: frequently asked questions

Our live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a few other major sending countries. It doesn't yet quote transfers that start in Liberia, so instead of an empty table we list the operators verified to serve the corridor. Confirm the live rate and fee with each one before you send.

Yes. Both Western Union and MoneyGram can pay into a Ghanaian mobile wallet, MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money, and the money is usually available within minutes. You just need the recipient's number, registered in their own name. Bank deposit and cash pickup are also options.

For a mobile-money payout, the recipient's MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo number in their own name. For cash pickup, their full name as it appears on their ID plus the reference number, which they collect with a photo ID. For a bank deposit, their full name, bank and account number. You'll also need your own ID to send from Liberia.

Mobile-money and cash payouts are usually available within minutes. Bank deposits take longer, from a few hours to a few business days. The agent will give an estimated delivery time before you confirm.

On the Liberia side, transfers go through a licensed operator with ID, and there are reporting rules on larger and cash amounts. On the Ghana side, mobile wallets set per-transaction and daily limits, so a very large amount may need to go to a bank instead. Ghana does not treat personal remittances received from abroad as taxable income.

Paying with cash at the counter avoids card charges. If a branch takes a card, check whether your bank treats it as a cash advance, which can add a fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the counter fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.

Reasonably so. Both countries are in West Africa, and outbound transfers from Liberia go through licensed operators at commercial banks, chiefly Western Union and MoneyGram. Ghana receives the money by mobile wallet, cash or bank deposit in cedi.
