Kenya is an open sending country, so you have a few real choices for Ghana. The simplest is M-Pesa Global, sent straight from your phone, though it is capped per transfer. For a larger amount, Western Union or MoneyGram through an agent is the usual route. Money into Ghana most often arrives as MTN Mobile Money, or as cash or a bank deposit, in Ghanaian cedi. The upfront fee is only part of the cost. What really decides how many cedi arrive is the margin added to the exchange rate, so compare the amount that actually reaches the recipient, not just the fee.
Why Kenya to Ghana shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Kenya, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it.
Kenya is, however, an open sending country, with M-Pesa Global and the big agent networks all handling outbound transfers. Until we can pull live Kenya rates, this page lists the ways verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote, and confirm the rate, fee and limits before you commit.
How the money reaches Ghana
Most transfers into Ghana land in a mobile wallet, usually MTN Mobile Money, and also Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money. Cash pickup and bank deposit are also available. The money arrives in Ghanaian cedi, and the recipient can spend it or withdraw it at an agent.
For a mobile wallet, you need the recipient's number registered in their own name. For cash, they collect with a government photo ID and the reference number. For a bank deposit, you'll need their full name, bank and account number. From Kenya you can start the transfer on your M-Pesa app, or at an agent for a larger amount.
What sending money to Ghana really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
Each provider adds a margin to the mid-market rate between the shilling and the cedi. On a larger transfer this margin can outweigh the upfront fee, so compare the cedi that actually arrive across the options.
The M-Pesa Global cap
M-Pesa Global is quick and convenient, but a single transfer is capped at KES 70,000. For a larger amount you'll need an agent such as Western Union or MoneyGram, so factor the cap in when you plan a bigger payment.
Cash and mobile-network pricing
Mobile-money and agent networks avoid intermediary-bank charges but can carry a wider rate margin, and a payout wallet or agent may apply its own cash-out fee at the far end. Check the total cost, not just the sending fee.
Rules on each side
Sending from Kenya
Kenya's outbound transfers are regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya. You can send straight from an M-Pesa wallet through M-Pesa Global, which caps a single transfer at KES 70,000, or through an agent such as Western Union or MoneyGram for a larger amount. You'll need ID, and a big transfer may need supporting documents. Use a regulated provider rather than an informal channel.
Receiving in Ghana
Payouts are handled by operators and mobile-money providers regulated by the Bank of Ghana. Personal remittances received from abroad are not treated as taxable income. MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo set per-transaction and daily wallet limits and update them from time to time, so a very large transfer may need to go to a bank account instead of a wallet. Check the current limits with the provider before sending a large amount.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
With M-Pesa Global you fund the transfer straight from your M-Pesa balance, which is usually the cheapest and quickest way for a smaller amount. At an agent you'll pay in cash or from your account. If you pay by card anywhere, check first how your bank treats it, since some issuers process a money-transfer payment as a cash advance, adding a one-off fee and interest from day one.
Scams to watch on this route
The most common traps target the recipient in Ghana, where mobile-money fraud is common. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The fake reversal message
Rule: a forged text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real wallet balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.
PIN and OTP requests
Rule: to receive money into an MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo wallet, the recipient never enters a PIN or shares a one-time code. Anyone asking for a PIN or code to "release" a payment is a fraudster.
Fake agent or staff calls
Rule: nobody from the mobile network or the operator ever needs the wallet PIN to "help", "upgrade" or "reverse" a transfer. Never share it, and cash out only at a registered agent.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the recipient's wallet number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use a verified provider rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.
How most people send money from Kenya to Ghana
For most people, the simplest route is M-Pesa Global straight from the phone for a smaller amount, or Western Union or MoneyGram through an agent for a larger one, paying out to an MTN wallet in Ghana. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, treat this page as a vetted shortlist, then judge each option by the cedi that actually arrive after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's details before you send.
