Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about GH₵15.581 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Ghanaian cedi is a rate checked constantly by the 250,000-strong British-Ghanaian community sending money home to family. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A high-street bank can quietly keep a slice of it in the exchange rate, on top of a flat fee, even when it looks "free".

As of 10 October 2026, 1 GBP = GH₵15.581, up 0.76% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to GHS rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = GH₵15.581. On its own that number tells you little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the long history.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. The cedi is one of the world's fastest-depreciating currencies, so the long trend has been the pound buying ever more cedis. The pound's all-time high was near GH₵16.97, touched during the currency distress of recent years.

Through the first half of 2026 the rate ran between about GH₵14.10 (2 January) and GH₵15.86 (5 June), before settling near GH₵15. That is far calmer than the chaos of 2022, when the cedi crashed and was named the world's worst-performing currency.

So for anyone sending pounds to Ghana, today's rate is historically strong, and crucially it is now stable rather than in freefall. Your pound buys a lot of cedis, and they hold their value far better than they did two years ago.

There is a deeper reason the cedi behaves the way it does. We cover it in section 05: years of high inflation, heavy imports and debt, now steadied by an IMF programme.

02

How much is your money in cedis?

At today's mid-market rate of GH₵15.581 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A provider gives you a little less. The live comparison table above shows the real, after-fee amounts.

Cedis in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a cedi amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price, a salary or a property figure in cedis.

GH₵100£6.42
GH₵1,000£64.18
GH₵10,000£641.83

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Ghana really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on frequent family transfers it adds up fast over a year.

The cost has two parts: the flat fee you can see, and the exchange-rate margin you often cannot. A high-street bank like Barclays typically adds a 2 percent margin on a currency like the cedi, plus a fixed fee of £4 to £12.

On a small £100 transfer, that works out at roughly £7 in total cost, about 7 percent of what you sent. The flat fee alone eats a painful chunk of a small remittance. On £1,000, the bank's margin and fee come to around £25.

The specialists built for this corridor are far cheaper. Wise charges about £12 to send £1,000 at the real mid-market rate. Africa-focused apps like LemFi and Sendwave charge £0 flat fee and make their money on a small 1 to 1.5 percent rate margin, which is ideal for the small, regular amounts families send.

Mobile money rules payouts. In Ghana, most people receive money into a mobile-money wallet, above all MTN MoMo, not a bank account. It is instant and works everywhere.

One trap to know: MoMo wallets have balance limits by verification tier. A basic wallet caps at GH₵5,000, so a large transfer, say £2,000 or so, can stall or fail if your recipient has not upgraded their KYC tier. Check before you send a big amount.

05

What moves the GBP to GHS rate: inflation, gold and the IMF

This is the part that changes how you read every pound-to-cedi move, and the cedi has a very particular story.

The cedi has a long history of losing value. Ghana imports more than it exports, so it constantly needs foreign currency, and years of high inflation have eaten the cedi's purchasing power. It even dropped four zeros in a 2007 redenomination. The pound has trended upward against it for a decade.

The 2022 crisis was the low point. Debt, a loss of market access and global shocks sent inflation to a peak of 54 percent in late 2022. Ghana turned to the IMF for a $3 billion rescue programme, approved in 2023, which came with strict budget rules and a debt restructuring.

That programme is why it is calmer now. IMF money rebuilt reserves, inflation fell back into single digits, and the cedi even rallied in late 2025. The Bank of Ghana still runs a high policy rate, 14 percent in mid-2026, to keep the currency supported.

Gold, cocoa and oil set the tone. Ghana earns its foreign currency from gold, cocoa and oil exports. When those prices fall, or cocoa harvests suffer from bad weather, the cedi loses support. A "gold-for-oil" scheme that once eased fuel imports was scrapped in 2025, putting that dollar demand back on the open market.

The practical takeaway: watch Ghana's inflation, the IMF reviews, and commodity prices, alongside UK interest rates on the pound side.

06

Sending money, property and the diaspora in Ghana

This is the part generic rate pages skip, and for British-Ghanaians it is the part that matters most: how money arrives, buying property, and the residency routes home.

New rule: cedis only. Since 2026 the Bank of Ghana requires every inbound remittance to be paid to your family in cedis, not dollars or pounds over the counter, and to be credited within 24 hours at a standardised market rate. This stops banks quietly marking up the rate on the payout side.

Foreigners cannot own land freehold. Ghana's 1992 Constitution bars non-citizens from freehold land. A British-Ghanaian without dual citizenship counts as a foreigner and is limited to a 50-year lease at a time, renewable but not guaranteed.

Watch out for land scams. Most land is "stool" or family land, held by traditional chiefs, and the informal system makes "double sales", the same plot sold to several buyers, a genuine risk. Always verify title at the Lands Commission and insist on a proper site plan before paying.

The Right of Abode. Members of the diaspora who cannot claim dual citizenship can apply for the Right of Abode, which grants permanent, visa-free residency and the right to work without a permit. It does not give citizenship, so the 50-year lease limit still applies, and approval can take 12 to 24 months.

Gifts to close family are tax-free. Money you send to help your family is not taxed. Gifts to a spouse, child, parent, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew are exempt too. Other taxable gifts can face a 25 percent rate and must be declared to the tax authority within 21 days.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. As of mid-2026 the pound sits near GH₵15, historically strong and, for now, stable rather than crashing.

Forecasting models see near-term stability, roughly GH₵15.10 to GH₵15.13 by the end of 2026. Looking further out, most expect the cedi to resume its long slide, with projections in the range of GH₵16.70 to GH₵19.12 per pound during 2027. The main risks to the cedi are election-year spending, weaker gold or cocoa revenues, and any slip in the IMF programme. Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events.

For a large one-off transfer, such as buying property or funding a business, many use a forward contract to fix today's rate up to a year ahead for a small deposit, so a falling cedi cannot change what your family receives. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to GHS: frequently asked questions

The pound reached its strongest against the cedi during the recent currency distress, briefly near GH₵16.97 on standard charts. In 2026 the peak so far was about GH₵15.86 in June. Today it trades around GH₵15.581.

The cedi has a long structural tendency to weaken against the pound, driven by inflation and heavy imports. IMF support and Bank of Ghana action steadied it through 2024 and 2025, but most long-term forecasts expect it to resume falling, pushing the GBP/GHS rate toward roughly GH₵16.70 to GH₵19.10 during 2027. No one can predict it reliably.

At today's mid-market rate of GH₵15.581, £1,000 is about GH₵15,580.55. A real provider sends a little less once its rate and fee are applied. A high-street bank with a 2 percent margin plus a flat fee costs around £25 on £1,000, so compare the after-fee amounts above.

The cedi falls mainly because Ghana imports more than it exports, so it constantly needs foreign currency to pay for goods, which drains reserves. High inflation erodes its purchasing power, and heavy external debt puts further strain on reserves. Record remittances and the IMF programme help cushion the decline but do not reverse the long-run trend.

For someone sending pounds, current rates are historically strong at over 15 cedis per pound, and the cedi is far more stable than during the 2022 crash. With inflation down sharply from its 54 percent peak, the cedis you send today hold their local value much better. That is factual context, not a prediction.

The cheapest, fastest route is a digital specialist paying into a mobile-money wallet. Providers like Wise, LemFi, Sendwave and Taptap Send send straight to MTN MoMo, usually instantly, and beat high-street bank fees comfortably. Check your recipient's MoMo wallet limit before sending a large amount, and compare the live after-fee figures above.
