Why Jamaica to Ghana shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Jamaica, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it.
Outbound transfers from Jamaica go through a licensed remittance company under Bank of Jamaica oversight. How the money reaches Ghana
Most transfers into Ghana land in a mobile wallet, usually MTN Mobile Money, and also Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money. Both verified operators can pay to a wallet, and the money is usually spendable within minutes. Cash pickup and bank deposit are also available, and the money arrives in Ghanaian cedi.
For a mobile wallet, you need the recipient's number registered in their own name. For cash, they collect with a government photo ID and the reference number. For a bank deposit, you'll need their full name, bank and account number. You send from Jamaica online or at an agent such as GraceKennedy Money Services.
What sending money to Ghana really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
Operators usually add a percentage to the mid-market rate on the way to the cedi, often via the US dollar. On a larger transfer this margin can outweigh the upfront fee, so compare the cedi that actually arrive across both operators.
Online send caps
Some Jamaican services cap online sends, for example around US$1,000 every three days, so a larger amount may mean a branch visit or a few transfers. Factor the cap in when you plan a bigger payment.
Cash and mobile-network pricing
Agent cash and mobile-money networks avoid intermediary-bank charges but can carry a wider rate margin, and a payout wallet or agent may add its own cash-out fee. Check the total cost, not just the counter fee.
Rules on each side
Sending from Jamaica
Outbound transfers are regulated and permitted under Bank of Jamaica oversight, through a licensed remittance company such as GraceKennedy Money Services. You'll need identification, and the operator runs standard anti-money-laundering checks. Some services cap online sends, for example around US$1,000 every three days. Use a regulated operator rather than an informal channel, and confirm the current limits before you send.
Receiving in Ghana
Payouts are handled by operators and mobile-money providers regulated by the Bank of Ghana. Personal remittances received from abroad are not treated as taxable income. MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo set per-transaction and daily wallet limits and update them from time to time, so a very large transfer may need to go to a bank account instead of a wallet. Check the current limits with the provider before sending a large amount.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
You fund the transfer from a card or bank online, or in cash at an agent. If you pay by card, check first how your bank treats it. Some issuers process a money-transfer payment as a cash advance, which can add a one-off fee and interest from day one, quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive. And compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the fee.
Scams to watch on this route
The most common traps target the recipient in Ghana, where mobile-money fraud is common. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The fake reversal message
Rule: a forged text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real wallet balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.
PIN and OTP requests
Rule: to receive money into an MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo wallet, the recipient never enters a PIN or shares a one-time code. Anyone asking for a PIN or code to "release" a payment is a fraudster.
Fake agent or staff calls
Rule: nobody from the mobile network or the operator ever needs the wallet PIN to "help", "upgrade" or "reverse" a transfer. Never share it, and cash out only at a registered agent.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the recipient's wallet number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use a verified operator rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.

Funding from a bank online, or paying cash at an agent, avoids some card charges. If you pay by card, check whether your bank treats it as a cash advance, which can add a fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.
