Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about QAR4.9609 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Qatari riyal is a corridor built almost entirely on people, an expat-dominated country where British nationals send tax-free wages home, fund school fees or buy a freehold flat in Lusail or The Pearl. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet 2 to 4 percent margin inside the exchange rate.

As of 25 August 2026, 1 GBP = QAR4.9609, up 0.71% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to QAR rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = QAR4.9609. On its own that number means little. What matters is the one fact that governs this entire pair.

The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed USD 1 = QAR 3.64, set in Qatari law by Royal Decree in 2001. So the pound does not really trade against the riyal at all. GBP to QAR is a synthetic cross: it is simply the pound's dollar rate multiplied by 3.64. Every high and low below is a GBP/USD story wearing a riyal costume.

The highest the pair reached in the past decade was QAR5.4536, on 23 June 2016, the eve of the Brexit referendum and the peak of confidence in sterling before the vote. Ten years ago the pound routinely bought 5.25 to 5.40 riyals.

The multi-year low came fast after that vote, at QAR4.4254 on 11 October 2016. More recently the pair bottomed near QAR4.7375 in the 2025 to 2026 window.

Against that history, a rate near 4.88 sits in the lower-middle of the decade's range. Sterling is down roughly 10 percent against the riyal over ten years, and every point of that is really the pound weakening against the dollar. Judge today's rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

How much is your money in Qatari riyals?

At today's mid-market rate of QAR4.9609 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee riyals each one delivers today.

Qatari riyals in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a riyal amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in riyals, such as a Doha flat, a school-fee invoice or a salary figure.

Riyal amountIn pounds (mid-market)
QAR100£20.16
QAR1,000£201.58
QAR10,000£2,015.77
QAR50,000£10,078.87
QAR100,000£20,157.74

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Qatar really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on monthly wages home or a six-figure property payment it adds up fast.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. Traditional UK banks often advertise a "zero fee" transfer while embedding a 2 to 4 percent margin in the rate, and an intermediary SWIFT charge can strip a further USD 35 to 50 from the money in transit.

Take a £1,000 transfer at a mid-market rate near 4.88. A bank keeping roughly a 2.75 percent margin plus a wire fee lands the recipient around QAR4,600. Send the same £1,000 through a mid-market specialist such as Wise, which uses the real rate and charges a transparent fee of about £15.38 on that amount, and the recipient gets close to QAR4,805.

That gap is about 205 riyals, roughly £42, on a single £1,000 transfer. On a large property payment the same percentage becomes thousands, because the margin is a slice of the whole sum, not a flat charge.

One practical point for this corridor. Watch the headline rate too. A flat-fee provider like Remitly can advertise a £2.49 fee yet apply a worse dollar leg inside the rate, so the true cost is the fee plus that hidden markup. Compare the riyals that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to QAR rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to QAR is not a UK-versus-Qatar story at all. Because of the peg, it is a pound-versus-dollar story that the riyal mirrors exactly.

1. The dollar and the fixed peg. The riyal is glued to the US dollar at 3.64, so it never moves independently against the pound. When US data such as a jobs or inflation print strengthens the dollar, the riyal strengthens against sterling by the same proportion. To track your rate, watch the US dollar and GBP/USD, not anything happening in Doha.

2. Central bank policy. The gap between the two central banks steers capital flows. As of mid-2026 the Bank of England holds its base rate at 3.75 percent, while the Qatar Central Bank, which imports US policy to defend the peg, keeps its lending rate at 4.35 percent and its deposit rate at 3.85 percent. That higher riyal-side yield keeps quiet downward pressure on the pound.

3. Inflation. UK inflation sat near 2.8 percent in mid-2026, still above target, while Qatar's ran cooler at about 2.2 percent. The faster erosion of the pound's purchasing power is a slow structural drag on the pair.

4. Energy exports. Qatar is one of the world's top three LNG exporters, so high gas prices flood it with dollars and make defending the peg effortless. That anchors the riyal firmly to the dollar and, by extension, to whatever the pound is doing against it.

The practical takeaway: for both the day-to-day rate and the longer trend, watch sterling against the dollar. The riyal simply comes along for the ride.

06

No income tax, the cash limit and buying property in Qatar

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Qatar corridor it is where the money actually gets made or lost.

Why the corridor is so busy. Qatar's population is roughly 88 to 90 percent expatriate, with an estimated 22,000 to 29,000 British nationals among them. Most are drawn by tax-free salaries in energy, construction, finance and education, so this corridor is rarely a one-off. It is monthly wages home, a child's tuition, a parent's allowance, or a freehold purchase.

Zero personal tax. Qatar levies no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and no wealth tax, so a salary earned there is entirely net. Moving your own money into Qatar or sending a gift is not taxed in Qatar. Note that if you stay UK statutory resident, or return home, UK rules can still apply to repatriated wealth. This is general information, not tax advice.

The cash declaration limit. Under Qatar's anti-money-laundering law, anyone entering or leaving through Hamad International Airport with cash, precious metals or bearer instruments worth QAR 50,000 or more, roughly £10,250, must file a formal customs declaration. Failure to declare can mean confiscation, fines up to QAR 500,000 or up to three years in prison. The documented bank route avoids all of this.

Buying property and the residency link. Non-Qataris can buy full freehold in designated zones such as The Pearl-Qatar, Lusail City, West Bay Lagoon and Al Khor Resort. A purchase above QAR 730,000 (about £150,000) unlocks a renewable temporary residency, and one above QAR 3,650,000 (about £750,000) can qualify for permanent residency with access to state healthcare and education. On sums that large the exchange rate matters more than any fee.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. As of July 2026 the pair is fluctuating around 4.85 to 4.89, and over the trailing 30 days it moved between a high of 4.9150 and a low of 4.7831. Sterling has shown slight near-term resilience but remains suppressed by a persistently strong dollar.

Because the pair is mathematically bound to GBP/USD, the forecasts to watch are the ones for the pound against the dollar. Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan see GBP/USD near 1.36 by the end of 2026, which implies about QAR4.95. Scotiabank is more bullish at 1.37, implying QAR4.98, while ING is cautious at 1.33 to 1.34, implying QAR4.84 to 4.87.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Lusail property completion, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate for up to a year or more ahead. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to QAR: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of QAR4.9609, £1,000 is about QAR4,960.87. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee riyals in the table above.

No. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed USD 1 = QAR 3.64, set in Qatari law in 2001. So the GBP to QAR rate is not a direct UK-Qatar rate at all. It moves almost entirely on how the pound trades against the dollar, which is why a weak sterling week versus the USD gives you fewer riyals even though nothing changed in Qatar.

In the past decade the pound reached about QAR5.4536 on 23 June 2016, the eve of the Brexit referendum. It then fell hard, bottoming near QAR4.4254 that October. Today it sits near QAR4.9609, in the lower-middle of the decade's range, and the whole move reflects sterling's weakness against the dollar.

Any amount, but Qatar enforces a declaration limit. If you carry cash, precious metals or bearer instruments worth QAR 50,000 or more, roughly £10,250, you must formally declare it at Hamad International Airport on arrival or departure. Failing to declare can mean confiscation, a fine up to QAR 500,000 or up to three years in prison. A documented bank transfer avoids the whole issue.

Yes. Non-Qataris can buy full freehold in designated zones such as The Pearl-Qatar, Lusail City, West Bay Lagoon and Al Khor Resort. A purchase above QAR 730,000 (about £150,000) unlocks a renewable temporary residency, and one above QAR 3,650,000 (about £750,000) can qualify for permanent residency. Because the sums and dates are known, many buyers lock the rate with a forward contract.

A bank-to-bank transfer to a Qatari IBAN through a mid-market specialist such as Wise is usually cheapest. They apply the real rate with a small, visible fee, for example about £15.38 on £1,000, while high-street banks bury a margin of up to 4 percent in a "free" transfer plus a SWIFT charge. Watch flat-fee providers too, since a low fee can hide a worse rate. Always compare the riyals that actually arrive.
