Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about OMR 0.5180 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Omani rial is about as predictable as a currency pair gets, because the rial is bolted to the US dollar. So the rate just mirrors the pound against the dollar. The catch is one that high-value currencies make worse. The mid-market rate is not the rate you actually get, and because a rial is worth over two pounds, a bank's 3 percent margin looks like a tiny number while costing you real money.

As of 7 August 2026, 1 GBP = OMR0.5180, up 0.65% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to OMR rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = OMR 0.5180. Notice it is well below 1. The rial is one of the world's highest-valued currencies, worth more than a pound and more than two and a half dollars.

Since the rial is fixed to the dollar, this pair moves only as much as the pound moves against the dollar. Through 2026 it has ranged between roughly OMR 0.48 and OMR 0.53, reaching about 0.53 in late January and dipping near 0.51 in June.

At around OMR 0.5180, the pound is in the upper half of that range, so it is buying more rials than it did through most of 2024 and 2025.

Use the rate card above for the 30-day and 90-day range. There is no Oman-specific news to wait on here, so the choice of provider matters far more than the timing.

02

How much is your money in rials?

At today's mid-market rate of OMR 0.5180 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth. Because the rial is high-value, the rial figures come out smaller than the pounds you send.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A provider will give you a little less. The live comparison table above shows the real, after-fee amounts.

03

Rials back to pounds

Going the other way is useful for checking a salary, a payout or a price in Muscat. Because a single rial is worth more than two pounds, rial amounts convert to noticeably larger pound figures.

Rial amountIn pounds (mid-market)
OMR 100£193.06
OMR 1,000£1,930.63
OMR 10,000£19,306.34
OMR 100,000£193,063.35
OMR 1,000,000£1,930,633.50

A modest-looking rial figure carries a lot of pounds, which is precisely why the exchange-rate margin deserves attention on this route.

04

What sending money to Oman really costs

With the rate this stable, the margin is the whole game. The provider you pick decides what arrives, far more than the day you send.

The cost mostly hides in the exchange rate, not the visible fee. A UK bank will often show a low or zero fee, then convert two to four percent below mid-market. On a high-value currency that trick is especially effective.

Take an illustrative £1,000 at a mid-market rate near OMR 0.516. At the true rate that is 516 rials.

A high-street bank converting at around OMR 0.495 pays out about 495 rials. The shortfall is only 21 rials, which sounds trivial.

But 21 rials is worth over £40. A mid-market specialist charging a clear fee of around £15 leaves you far better off. The small numbers are the whole disguise, so always compare the rials that actually arrive, which the table above ranks for you.

05

Why the rial only moves with the dollar

Understand this one point and the rest of the page follows.

The Central Bank of Oman has fixed the rial to the US dollar since the 1970s, at a rate settled in the mid-1980s that has not budged since. One dollar buys well under half a rial, which is why the rial is nominally so valuable.

Because the rial-dollar rate is frozen, pound to rial is simply pound to dollar rescaled. Every move you see in GBP to OMR comes from the pound rising or falling against the dollar. Omani interest rates, oil headlines and local news do not shift the rate day to day, since the central bank follows the US Federal Reserve to hold the peg in place.

So if you are hoping for a better moment, the thing to watch is the pound against the dollar, not anything happening in Muscat.

One practical note: the rial is a restricted currency abroad. You cannot hold real rials in a UK bank account, so your pounds are turned into rials only once the money reaches Oman.

06

What keeps the peg solid

A fixed rate is only as safe as the finances behind it, so it is reasonable to ask whether Oman can keep defending it. In 2026 the signs are strong.

Ratings back on investment grade. Through 2025 and 2026 all three big agencies, Fitch, S&P and Moody's, restored Oman to investment grade, a vote of confidence in the country's finances and its peg.

Debt sharply lower. Government debt has fallen from around two thirds of the economy in 2020 to roughly a third, after years of oil surpluses and early debt repayment.

Oil still pays the bills. Hydrocarbons remain the bulk of government revenue, and firm prices have rebuilt reserves. Alongside that, the Vision 2040 plan is steering investment into green hydrogen and renewables to widen the base over time.

The takeaway: the reserves and the fiscal position behind the peg are in good shape, so the rate you see is genuinely stable, set by the pound and the dollar rather than any doubt about the rial.

07

Who moves money between Britain and Oman

This corridor runs in both directions, which is a little unusual, so it is worth splitting.

Pounds heading to Oman tend to come from British professionals in energy, engineering and education funding a life in Muscat, and from UK companies investing in projects such as the Duqm economic zone and Oman's green-energy push.

Rials heading to Britain are just as common. Oman hosts a large expatriate workforce, and British staff there routinely send their tax-free earnings home to cover mortgages, family and savings.

Students. The UK is a favourite destination for Omani students, so families and government sponsors regularly convert rials to pounds for tuition and living costs.

08

Getting the money there, and the weekend trap

Oman's banking is modern and the payout is straightforward, but one timing detail trips people up.

The rails. Most transfers land in an account at a bank like Bank Muscat, the National Bank of Oman, Bank Dhofar or Sohar International. For recipients who want cash, exchange houses across the country pay out instantly. A digital specialist can reach a bank account in minutes; a plain bank SWIFT transfer usually takes three to five working days.

Mind the Friday-Saturday weekend. Oman's working week runs Sunday to Thursday, so its weekend is Friday and Saturday. A transfer sent from the UK on a Thursday can sit until Sunday before a Muscat bank processes it. Send earlier in the week if timing matters.

Holidays. The two Eid holidays and National Day can pause banking for several days, so plan around them.

Get the name right. For a cash pickup, the recipient's name must match their Omani resident card or passport exactly, middle names included, or the payout is refused.

09

Tax, and should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice.

Tax. Oman has no personal income tax today, and money sent to family as support or a gift is not taxed. There is a notable change coming: from January 2028 Oman will introduce a 5 percent personal income tax, the first in the Gulf, but only on income above about OMR 42,000 a year, roughly £81,000, which exempts the large majority of people. Personal remittances and gifts stay outside it entirely. None of this is tax advice.

Timing. Since the rial tracks the dollar, your rate is best when the pound is strong against the dollar, so that is what to watch, not Omani news. Send early in the week to clear before the Friday-Saturday weekend. If your family needs the money, though, send when they need it and focus on the provider rate, which you control.

For a large payment on a fixed future date, a forward contract from an FCA-authorised broker can lock today's pound-dollar rate. Weigh the certainty against the cost.

10

GBP to OMR: frequently asked questions

The mid-market rate today is about OMR 0.5180 to the pound, which is the benchmark. The best rate you can actually get is whichever provider in the comparison above delivers the most rials after fees. It updates live and is ranked by exactly that.

Because it is pegged to the US dollar at a rate that makes one rial worth about 2.6 dollars, and currently more than one pound. It is a nominal effect of the peg's ratio, not a sign that Oman's economy is bigger than the UK's or the US's.

Yes. The rial has been fixed to the US dollar since the 1970s, at the current rate since the mid-1980s, and the Central Bank of Oman defends it with its reserves. That is why the rial-dollar rate does not move and pound to rial simply follows the pound against the dollar.

Yes, but only through the pound-dollar market. Because the rial-dollar rate is fixed, every move in pound to rial comes from the pound strengthening or weakening against the dollar. Omani economic news will not move it.

At today's mid-market rate of OMR 0.5180, £1,000 is about OMR 517.96. A real provider sends a little less once its rate and fee are applied, and because the rial is high-value, a bank's small-looking margin can still cost you over £40 on £1,000, so compare the after-fee amounts above.

Digital specialists can reach an Omani bank account in seconds to minutes, and cash pickups are usually instant. A plain bank SWIFT transfer takes three to five working days, and can stall over Oman's Friday-Saturday weekend.

No. Oman has no personal income tax, and money sent to family as support or a gift is not taxed. A 5 percent income tax arrives in 2028, but only on high incomes above about OMR 42,000 a year, and personal remittances are exempt. This is general information, not tax advice.

Since the rial tracks the dollar, the rate is best when the pound is strong against the dollar. For fast delivery, send early in the week so the transfer clears before Oman's Friday-Saturday banking weekend.
