GBP/BHD rate history
Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
One pound is worth about BD 0.5075 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.
Pound to Bahraini dinar is one of the steadiest pairs you will find, because the dinar is fixed to the US dollar. So the rate simply follows the pound against the dollar. The trap is the one every high-value currency sets. The mid-market rate is not the rate you actually get, and since a dinar is worth around two pounds, a bank's margin looks like loose change while quietly costing you real money.
As of 8 August 2026, 1 GBP = BHD0.5075, up 0.26% on the week.
Is this a good GBP to BHD rate right now?
Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = BD 0.5075. It is below 1 because the dinar is the world's second most valuable currency, after the Kuwaiti dinar, worth about 2.65 dollars and comfortably more than a pound.
With the dinar tied to the dollar, this pair moves only as much as the pound moves against the dollar. Across the first half of 2026 it averaged about BD 0.507, peaking near BD 0.52 in late January and easing to around BD 0.50 by late June.
At around BD 0.5075, the pound is roughly mid-range. There is no Bahraini news to wait on, so the provider you use matters far more than the day.
Use the rate card above for the 30-day and 90-day range. On a pair this calm, shopping the provider is where the real saving is.
How much is your money in dinars?
At today's mid-market rate of BD 0.5075 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth. Because the dinar is high-value, the dinar figures land smaller than the pounds you send.
These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A provider will give you a little less. The live comparison table above shows the real, after-fee amounts.
| You convert | You get (mid-market) |
|---|---|
| £1 | BD 0.51 |
| £5 | BD 2.54 |
| £10 | BD 5.07 |
| £50 | BD 25.37 |

Dinars back to pounds
Going the other way is useful for checking a salary, a payout or a price in Manama. Because one dinar is worth about two pounds, dinar amounts convert to roughly double in pounds.
| Dinar amount | In pounds (mid-market) |
|---|---|
| BD 100 | £197.06 |
| BD 1,000 | £1,970.64 |
| BD 10,000 | £19,706.37 |
| BD 100,000 | £197,063.72 |
| BD 1,000,000 | £1,970,637.23 |
A small dinar figure is a large pound figure, which is exactly why the exchange-rate margin is worth watching on this route.
What sending money to Bahrain really costs
With a rate this stable, the margin is where the money goes. What arrives depends on the provider, not the timing.
Most of the cost hides in the exchange rate, not the fee you see. A UK bank often advertises a low or zero fee, then converts three to five percent below mid-market. On a currency worth two pounds a unit, that is easy to miss.
Take an illustrative £1,000 at a mid-market rate near BD 0.504. At the true rate that is about 504 dinars.
A high-street bank converting at around BD 0.480 pays out roughly 480 dinars. The gap is only 24 dinars, which barely registers.
But 24 dinars is worth close to £45. A mid-market specialist charging a clear fee leaves nearly all of that in your pocket. The small numbers are the disguise, so always compare the dinars that actually arrive, which the table above ranks for you.

Why the dinar only moves with the dollar
Grasp this and the rest of the page makes sense.
The Central Bank of Bahrain has fixed the dinar to the US dollar at a set rate since 2001, having effectively tracked the dollar since 1980. One dollar buys well under half a dinar, which is why the dinar is nominally so heavy.
Because the dinar-dollar rate never moves, pound to dinar is just pound to dollar, rescaled. Everything you see in GBP to BHD comes from the pound rising or falling against the dollar. Bahrain's own economy and news do not shift the rate, because the central bank buys and sells dollars to hold the peg exactly in place.
So the useful thing to watch, if you are timing a transfer, is the pound against the dollar, not anything reported from Manama.
Note too that the dinar is a restricted currency abroad. You cannot hold real dinars in a UK bank account, so your pounds become dinars only once the money reaches Bahrain.
What keeps the peg solid, and who backs it
A fixed rate is only as strong as the money behind it, and here Bahrain's story differs from its wealthier neighbours. It is worth understanding.
Leaner reserves than the big oil states. Bahrain has less oil and slimmer reserves than Saudi Arabia or the UAE, so its buffer to defend the peg alone is thinner. Its credit rating sits below investment grade, in single-B territory.
The Gulf backstop. What underpins confidence is regional support. In 2018 Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait put together a support package worth over ten billion dollars to steady Bahrain's finances, and part of that facility remains available. In effect, the peg is backed not just by Bahrain but by its Gulf partners, who have a strong interest in keeping it stable.
A broad economy. Oil still earns about half of exports, but Bahrain leans more on financial services, tourism and logistics than most of the region, and the non-oil side has been growing.
The takeaway: the peg is not risk-free, but it has serious regional weight behind it and has held firmly. For a sender, the rate you see is stable in practice, set by the pound and the dollar rather than by the dinar itself.
Who moves money between Britain and Bahrain
The UK and Bahrain have unusually close ties for a country this size, and the money flows both ways.
The Royal Navy. Britain runs a permanent naval base in Bahrain, the UK Naval Support Facility at Mina Salman, its first permanent base east of Suez in decades. That means a steady flow of pounds converted to dinars for personnel and local costs.
Finance professionals. Bahrain is a long-established, tax-free financial hub, so British expats there move salaries and savings between UK and Bahraini accounts in both directions.
Students and family. Bahraini families send pounds to the UK for university tuition and living costs, and expats send dinars home.
Getting the money there: Fawri+ and the weekend trap
Bahrain's domestic payments are genuinely fast, but the cross-border leg has one catch.
The rails. Once money is in Bahrain, the Fawri+ system settles it into a bank account in about 30 seconds, around the clock, using the recipient's IBAN. Its daily limit was raised to 3,000 dinars in 2025. Transfers land at banks such as the National Bank of Bahrain, BBK or Ahli United, and cash pickup is available through exchange houses like BFC.
Mind the Friday-Saturday weekend. Fawri+ runs at weekends, but the international leg does not. Bahrain's weekend is Friday and Saturday, so a plain bank transfer sent from the UK on a Thursday can wait until Sunday to clear into the Bahraini system.
Holidays. The Eid holidays are set by lunar sighting just days ahead, which can cause short-notice banking pauses.
Get the name right. For a cash pickup, the recipient's name must match their Bahraini CPR card or passport exactly, or the funds are held.
Tax, and should you send now or wait?
Here is the factual picture, not advice.
Tax. Bahrain has no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and no wealth tax, and it does not tax inbound personal remittances. Money you send to family or your own account arrives in full. The Gulf funds itself through VAT and corporate taxes instead of taxing personal income. This is general information, not tax advice, and you still have your own UK tax position to consider.
Timing. Because the dinar tracks the dollar, your rate is best when the pound is strong against the dollar, so watch the pound-dollar market rather than Bahraini news. Send early in the week to clear before the Friday-Saturday weekend. If your family needs the money, send when they need it and focus on the provider rate, which you control.
For a large payment on a fixed future date, a forward contract from an FCA-authorised broker can lock today's pound-dollar rate. Weigh the certainty against the cost.
GBP to BHD: frequently asked questions
The mid-market rate today is about BD 0.5075 to the pound, which is the benchmark. The best rate you can actually get is whichever provider in the comparison above delivers the most dinars after fees. It updates live and is ranked by exactly that.
Because it is pegged to the US dollar at a rate that makes one dinar worth about 2.65 dollars, and more than one pound. It is the world's second most valuable currency after the Kuwaiti dinar. The high value is a feature of the peg's ratio, not a measure of the economy's size.
Yes. The dinar has been formally pegged to the US dollar since 2001, and tracked it from 1980, at a fixed rate the Central Bank of Bahrain defends. That is why the dinar-dollar rate does not move and pound to dinar simply follows the pound against the dollar.
Yes, but only through the pound-dollar market. Since the dinar-dollar rate is fixed, every move in pound to dinar comes from the pound strengthening or weakening against the dollar. Bahraini economic news will not move it.
At today's mid-market rate of BD 0.5075, £1,000 is about BD 507.45. A real provider sends a little less once its rate and fee are applied, and because the dinar is high-value, a bank's small-looking margin can still cost around £45 on £1,000, so compare the after-fee amounts above.
Once money reaches Bahrain, the Fawri+ network settles it into a bank account in about 30 seconds, day or night. Cross-border, a digital specialist usually takes one to two working days and a plain bank SWIFT transfer three to five, with the Friday-Saturday weekend adding delay.
No. Bahrain has no personal income tax and does not tax inbound personal remittances, so money sent to family or your own account arrives in full. This is general information, not tax advice.
Since the dinar tracks the dollar, the rate is best when the pound is strong against the dollar. For fast delivery, send early in the week so the transfer clears before Bahrain's Friday-Saturday banking weekend.
