Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about ₪4.0837 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Israeli shekel is a rate watched closely across the UK to Israel corridor, by a large diaspora sending family support, by olim moving savings ahead of aliyah, and by anyone buying property or repatriating a pension. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet 2 to 3 percent margin buried inside the exchange rate.

As of 24 August 2026, 1 GBP = ₪4.0837, up 1.00% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to ILS rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = ₪4.0837. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer trend.

One honest caveat the rate-comparison sites skip. A reliable all-time high for the pound against the shekel, going back to the New Shekel's introduction in 1985, is not well documented, so treat any single "record" figure with care. What can be pinned down is the recent range, and it tells a clear story.

Over the past year the pound's high against the shekel was ₪4.66, the 52-week high on the representative rate. A year ago, on 9 July 2025, a pound still bought about ₪4.52. The recent low came at ₪3.78, on 1 June 2026, with the 52-week representative low marked at ₪3.77.

Over a full decade the pound has structurally weakened against the shekel, driven by Israel's tech-led current account surplus and steady foreign investment into its high-tech sector. In the 12 months to mid-2026 alone the pound fell roughly 10 to 16 percent against the shekel, from above ₪4.50 down to today's level near ₪4.04. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

How much is your money in Israeli shekels?

At today's mid-market rate of ₪4.0837 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee shekels each one delivers today.

Israeli shekels in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a shekel amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in shekels, such as a Tel Aviv flat, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Shekel amountIn pounds (mid-market)
₪100£24.49
₪1,000£244.87
₪10,000£2,448.74
₪50,000£12,243.68
₪100,000£24,487.37

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Israel really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on an aliyah move or a property completion it adds up to serious sums.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. Industry data from Monito puts the average cost of a GBP to ILS transfer through a traditional bank at around 6.3 percent of the amount, up to 10.4 times more expensive than the cheapest online provider. The method you choose swings the outcome hugely.

Take a £1,000 transfer at a mid-market rate of about 4.049. Send it through a specialist such as Wise, which uses the real rate and a transparent fee of roughly £6.44, and the recipient gets close to ₪4,023. A high-street bank applying a 2 to 2.5 percent markup lands the recipient nearer ₪3,950 to ₪3,972, an effective cost of about £19 to £24 on that single transfer.

That gap is small in cash terms on £1,000, but it is a percentage of everything you send. Scale it to a six-figure aliyah or property sum and the same margin becomes thousands of pounds left on the table.

One practical point for this corridor. A bank-to-bank transfer straight to an Israeli IBAN through a specialist is both the cheapest and the fastest route, usually landing the same or next working day. Cash pick-up costs more, so compare the shekels that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to ILS rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to ILS is not really a direct UK-versus-Israel story. It is largely a dollar story that both currencies ride. The pair is effectively a cross of GBP/USD and USD/ILS, so what moves the US dollar globally tends to move this rate too.

1. Geopolitical and political risk. In the Israeli context this is the most acute day-to-day driver. The shekel is highly sensitive to regional conflict: the confrontation with Iran in spring 2026 sparked capital-flight fears and paused the central bank's rate-cutting, while a mid-2026 easing of tension lowered Israel's risk premium and strengthened the shekel. UK political and post-Brexit risk sits underneath sterling in the same way.

2. Central bank policy. The Bank of England held its base rate at 3.75 percent in June 2026, while the Bank of Israel cut to 3.5 percent on 6 July 2026, with its governor signalling rates could ease toward 3 percent over the coming year. That narrow gap gives sterling a slim yield edge, often offset by Israel's lower inflation.

3. Inflation. UK inflation ran near 2.8 percent in May 2026, above the Bank of England's target, while Israel held inflation at about 1.9 percent, inside its 1 to 3 percent band. Lower Israeli inflation structurally pressures the pound down against the shekel over time.

4. Tech exports and the current account. Israel runs a current account surplus fed by foreign investment into its high-tech sector. That constant inflow, converted into shekels to pay local salaries and taxes, creates steady appreciation pressure on the shekel and is a key reason the Bank of Israel intervenes to buy dollars.

The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the dollar and the regional risk mood. For the longer trend, watch Israeli inflation and the strength of its tech-driven surplus.

06

The olim tax holiday, aliyah transfers and Israel's cash rules

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Israel corridor it is where the costly mistakes and the biggest opportunities hide.

The 10-year tax holiday for new immigrants. Israel offers one of the world's most generous incentives for new immigrants (olim) and qualifying returning residents: a 10-year exemption from Israeli tax on income and assets sourced outside Israel. That covers foreign employment income, dividends, interest, rent, royalties and pensions, and profits on the sale of foreign assets such as UK property or share portfolios are exempt from Israeli capital gains tax for ten years while held overseas. This is general information, not tax advice.

The crucial 2026 change. Historically olim were also exempt from reporting that foreign income. For anyone becoming an Israeli resident on or after 1 January 2026, the 10-year tax exemption stays, but the reporting exemption has been removed. UK expats must now disclose overseas income on an annual Israeli return even when no Israeli tax is due. Timing your move matters.

Aliyah is driving the corridor. The UK is home to roughly 300,000 Jewish people, the second-largest community in Europe, and migration to Israel has surged. Research from the Institute for Jewish Policy Research recorded 742 British Jews making aliyah in 2025, the highest annual figure in more than 40 years. Each move means savings, property purchases and pensions crossing the corridor in large sums.

Israel's cash-declaration rules. Israel scrapped general FX controls in the 1990s, so you can hold and move currency freely, but strict declaration rules apply to cash. Carry 50,000 NIS or more (roughly £10,000 to £12,500) in or out and you must declare it on Customs Form 84. At land borders the threshold drops to 12,000 NIS. Failure to declare can mean confiscation, heavy fines or imprisonment, and splitting cash among family does not dodge the rule.

Why the bank route wins anyway. Israel is not part of SEPA, so a traditional bank transfer runs over SWIFT and picks up correspondent fees. Specialists sidestep that by paying in GBP in the UK and paying out shekels from a local Israeli account. For large sums like a property purchase, that documented digital route is both safer and, once fees are counted, usually cheaper than moving cash.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. As of mid-July 2026 the pound sits near ₪4.04, toward the middle-to-lower end of its 52-week range and well down from about ₪4.56 a year earlier, as the shekel weathered inflation and geopolitical shocks better than markets first feared.

Published forecasts split on where it goes next. WalletInvestor projects a mild recovery to 4.24 by July 2027, easing to 3.80 by 2031. CoinCodex sees 4.18 by end-2026 then 3.90 by 2030. 30rates expects near-term volatility, around 4.25 to 4.38 in mid-to-late 2026 before slipping toward 4.00 by May 2027. TradersUnion is more bearish, projecting about 3.71 by end-2026 and 3.48 by 2030. Those are projections, not promises.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by sudden geopolitical events or central bank surprises, so treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a property completion or an aliyah cost weeks or months away, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate near 4.05 rather than gamble on the day they send. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to ILS: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of ₪4.0837, £1,000 is about ₪4,083.74. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee shekels in the table above.

A reliable multi-decade all-time high is not well documented, so be wary of any single "record" figure. What is verifiable is the recent range: over the past year the pound's high was about ₪4.66, and a year ago, in July 2025, it bought roughly ₪4.52. Today it sits near ₪4.0837, toward the lower end of that range.

Not lately. Over the year to mid-2026 the pound fell roughly 10 to 16 percent against the shekel, from above ₪4.50 down to about ₪4.04, as Israel's tech-driven surplus and steady inflation supported the shekel. Forecasts split on the next move, so treat any single prediction as context, not a promise.

Moving your own money is not itself taxed. New immigrants (olim) get a 10-year exemption from Israeli tax on foreign-sourced income and assets. Note the 2026 change: anyone becoming resident on or after 1 January 2026 keeps the tax exemption but must now report overseas income annually, even when no Israeli tax is due. This is general information, not tax advice.

There is no limit on the amount, but there are strict declaration rules. You must declare cash, cheques or payment cards totalling 50,000 NIS or more (roughly £10,000 to £12,500) on Customs Form 84. At land border crossings the threshold drops to 12,000 NIS. Failing to declare can mean confiscation, fines or imprisonment.
