Sending money from the UAE to Sri Lanka

Our live price comparison can't quote UAE-origin transfers yet, but money genuinely moves on this route every day — the UAE is one of the top sources of money sent home to Sri Lanka, with a large Sri Lankan community living and working across the Emirates. Those transfers matter: Sri Lanka received a record US$8 billion in worker remittances in 2025. The providers below are verified to operate this corridor, with most paying straight into a Sri Lankan bank account through the instant CEFTS network or as cash at a bank counter. Rates and fees are set by each provider and must be confirmed on their own site before you send.

Most money sent from the UAE to Sri Lanka lands straight in a Sri Lankan bank account — often within minutes, thanks to the country's instant CEFTS network — or is collected as cash at a bank counter such as Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank or Hatton National. Sri Lanka doesn't use IBANs, so a bank deposit just needs the recipient's name, account number, bank and branch. The headline fee is only part of the picture — what really decides the cost is the margin added to the exchange rate, so always compare the rupees that actually arrive, not just the upfront fee.

01

Why UAE to Sri Lanka shows no live prices yet

Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of those providers currently quote transfers that start in the UAE, so the route comes back empty even though real services move billions of dollars on it every year.

Until we can pull live UAE rates, this page lists providers verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat the page as a shortlist, not a quote — and always confirm the rate and fee on the provider's own site before you commit.

02

How the money reaches Sri Lanka

The most common option is a direct deposit to a Sri Lankan bank account. Sri Lanka's CEFTS network (run by LankaPay) settles transfers between all member banks in real time, 24/7, so money credited this way usually arrives within minutes. Sri Lanka doesn't use IBANs — you just need the recipient's name, account number, bank and branch. Cash pickup is also widely available: the recipient collects at a bank counter such as Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank, National Savings Bank or Hatton National with their National ID and a reference number. Mobile wallets like Dialog eZ Cash and Mobitel mCash exist too, but on this corridor most payouts go to bank accounts or cash.

Bank deposit (CEFTS) — name, account number, bank + branch (no IBAN)
Usually minutes
Cash pickup — BOC / People's / HNB counter, with National ID + reference
Usually minutes
Foreign-currency account — pay into an NRFC/PFCA account to hold in FX
Minutes–1 day

CEFTS bank deposits and cash pickup are usually the fastest, landing within minutes; a traditional correspondent-bank transfer can take one to three business days depending on the receiving bank.

03

What sending money to Sri Lanka really costs

The headline fee is only part of the cost. On any transfer, the bigger number is usually hidden inside the exchange rate — so it's worth knowing where each slice goes before you send.

01

The exchange-rate margin

The gap between the real mid-market rate and the rate you're offered. Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, the rupee rate mostly tracks the dollar — margins can run from under 1 percent with the sharpest services to more than 3 percent with the priciest. On a larger transfer this usually outweighs any upfront fee.

02

The receiving-bank fee

Watch the far end too: some Sri Lankan banks charge a small flat fee to credit an inward transfer to a rupee account (Sampath Bank, for example, lists around LKR 575), while others — such as Bank of Ceylon — credit inward remittances free. It's worth knowing your recipient's bank policy.

03

VAT on the fee

In the UAE, the 5 percent VAT applies only to a fixed transfer fee, not to the exchange-rate margin or the money you send. It's a few fils on the flat fee, so it barely moves the total.

04

Tax and rules on each side

Sending from the UAE

The UAE charges no personal income tax and has no exchange controls, so you can send money abroad freely as family support or a gift. You'll need a valid Emirates ID to remit, and providers run standard identity checks. The 5 percent VAT applies only to a fixed transfer fee, never to the amount you send.

Receiving in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka does not tax family remittances received from a relative working abroad — the money is treated as a private transfer, not income. Since the 2022 economic crisis, the central bank has actively encouraged workers to send money through formal, legal channels rather than the illegal undiyal system, and foreign-currency accounts (NRFC) can offer extra interest benefits on money remitted this way.

05

Funding your transfer without overpaying

Paying from a UAE bank account or a debit card is usually the cheapest way to fund a transfer. Funding with a credit card is often treated by the card issuer as a cash advance, which can trigger a one-off fee and interest from day one with no grace period — quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive. Check how your card treats the payment before you use it, and have your Emirates ID to hand for the identity check.

06

Scams to watch on this route

Most traps target the recipient with a fake message or a fake windfall. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.

The "better rate" undiyal offer

Rule: since the rupee stabilised there's little rate advantage to informal channels, and they're illegal and unprotected. Ignore anyone offering a special off-the-books rate — use a licensed bank or provider.

Fake bank / OTP texts

Rule: a bank will never text or call asking for your account PIN or a one-time code to "release" an incoming transfer. Genuine remittances arrive automatically — never share a PIN or OTP.

Family "emergency" requests

Rule: an urgent money request that appears to come from a relative may be an impersonator. Confirm directly on a number you already know before sending anything.

Confirm before you send

Rule: check the recipient's name, account number, bank and branch against details they sent you in writing, and use a licensed provider rather than a stranger offering a "better rate" off-platform.

How most people send money from the UAE to Sri Lanka

Takeaway

For most people sending money from the UAE to Sri Lanka, the simplest route is a verified provider paying straight into the recipient's bank account through CEFTS, or a cash pickup at Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank or Hatton National — fast, familiar and easy to collect. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, treat this page as a vetted shortlist — then judge each option by the rupees that actually arrive after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's account details before you send.

UAE to Sri Lanka transfers: frequently asked questions

Our live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a few other major sending countries. It doesn't yet quote transfers that start in the UAE, so instead of an empty table we list providers verified to serve the corridor. Confirm the live rate and fee on each provider's own site before you send.

Usually within minutes. Sri Lanka's CEFTS network, run by LankaPay, settles transfers between member banks in real time, 24/7, so a provider connected to it can credit the recipient's account almost instantly. A traditional correspondent-bank transfer can take one to three business days instead.

For a bank deposit, the recipient's full name, account number, bank and branch — Sri Lanka doesn't use IBANs. For cash pickup, their full name as on their National ID plus a reference number. You'll also need your own valid Emirates ID to send.

At a large network of bank counters across Sri Lanka — most commonly Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank, National Savings Bank and Hatton National Bank, plus Western Union agents. Your recipient brings their National ID and the transaction reference number to collect. Cash pickup is usually available within minutes of you sending.

Yes. Since the 2022 default, an IMF-backed programme has stabilised Sri Lanka's economy — the rupee steadied and strengthened through 2024 and 2025, inflation fell and most import controls were lifted. Formal channels now give a fair rate, so there's no reason to risk the illegal undiyal system. Sending through a licensed bank or provider is both safe and competitive.

No. Money sent home to family as support is not taxed in the recipient's hands in Sri Lanka — it's treated as a private transfer, not income. The UAE also charges no tax on the amount you send abroad. Sending through formal channels can even earn extra interest if the money goes into a foreign-currency (NRFC) account.

It's one of the first names people think of, and it doesn't work in this direction. You can't pay for a Wise transfer with dirhams.

Wise's own currency list is split in two. AED sits in the column headed "you can only send money to these currencies", not in the list of currencies you can send from. Its UAE links point at the UK service, because there is no UAE sending flow behind them.

So Wise isn't an option for money leaving the UAE. It works the other way round: someone abroad, paying in a currency Wise does send from, can use it to send money to a UAE account.

Paying from a UAE bank account or a debit card is usually cheapest. Avoid funding with a credit card where you can — issuers often treat it as a cash advance, adding a one-off fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the upfront fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.
