GBP/LKR rate history
Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
One pound is worth about Rs 448.94 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.
Pound to Sri Lankan rupee is checked constantly by the roughly 150,000 Sri Lankans in Britain, many of them British Tamil families sending money home. But the catch this page exists to fix is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you actually get. A UK high-street bank can quietly keep 3 to 5 percent of it in the exchange rate, on top of a wire fee.
As of 24 August 2026, 1 GBP = ₨448.94, down 0.33% on the week.
Is this a good GBP to LKR rate right now?
Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = Rs 448.94. On its own that number tells you little. What matters is where it sits against recent weeks, and against the history.
Here is the context that makes this pair unusual. The rate roughly doubled in a single crisis. In 2020 a pound bought about Rs 246. Today it buys around Rs 450.
That leap was not a slow drift. It was the 2022 economic collapse, which we explain in section 05, and it reset the rupee to a permanently weaker level.
Since the crisis the pound has traded close to record highs against the rupee, reaching about Rs 467 in 2026. Over the past year it has swung roughly between Rs 396 and Rs 467, a wide band that shows the rupee is stabilising but still fragile.
So "a good rate" is relative. Use the rate card above for the 30-day and 90-day range and the 90-day high. If today is near the top of that range, the pound is buying more rupees than it has lately.
How much is your money in rupees?

Rupees back to pounds
Going the other way is just as useful for checking a payout or a price from home. Sri Lanka often counts larger sums in lakhs, where one lakh is Rs 100,000. Here is what round rupee amounts are worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate.
| Rupee amount | In pounds (mid-market) |
|---|---|
| Rs 1,000 | £2.23 |
| Rs 10,000 | £22.27 |
| Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) | £222.75 |
| Rs 1,000,000 | £2,227.46 |
| Rs 10,000,000 | £22,274.63 |
Because a pound buys so many rupees, even everyday UK sums turn into large rupee figures. That is exactly why the exchange-rate margin matters so much on this route.
What sending money to Sri Lanka really costs
This is where real money is won or lost, and the gap is bigger than most people expect.
Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. A UK bank often charges a flat wire fee and then converts at a rate 3 to 5 percent below mid-market. That gap is the profit.
We checked a live £1,000 transfer in July 2026 against a mid-market rate of about Rs 447.59.
A specialist using the mid-market rate (Wise, with a transparent fee of around £25.87) sent about Rs 436,000.
A high-street bank charging a £25 wire fee plus a 4 percent margin sent about Rs 418,900.
That is roughly Rs 17,000 lost, about £38, on a single £1,000 transfer to the bank. That is several days of average local wages, gone to a margin you never see.
Some app-based specialists such as Taptap Send advertise zero transfer fee on this route. Just check the exchange rate they use, because a "free" transfer can still hide a margin. The rule is simple: always compare the rupees that actually arrive.

Why the rate doubled: the 2022 crash
To understand today's rate you have to understand 2022, the year Sri Lanka's economy fell over.
In May 2022 the country defaulted on its foreign debt for the first time ever, unable to pay against about $51 billion owed. Usable reserves had drained to almost nothing.
A mix of things caused it: deep tax cuts in 2019, the loss of tourism during Covid, and an abrupt ban on chemical fertiliser that wrecked farm output. For a while the government printed money and tried to hold the rupee at an artificial level.
When that broke in March 2022, the rupee crashed. Against the dollar it fell from about 200 to 368 in months, and the pound roughly doubled against it. That is why a pound that bought Rs 246 in 2020 now buys around Rs 450.
The important point for a sender: this was a one-off reset, not a normal trend. The rupee is not crashing now. It settled at a new, much weaker level and has been broadly stable since.
What moves the GBP to LKR rate now
Since the crisis, the rupee has been rebuilt under an IMF programme, and that shapes how it moves today.
The rupee now floats. The central bank abandoned its artificial peg in 2022 and lets the market set the rate, stepping in only to smooth sharp moves. A strict IMF deal bars it from printing money to plug deficits, which removed the main old cause of collapse.
Reserves are being rebuilt. From almost zero in 2022, official reserves reached about $6.9 billion by mid-2026, largely thanks to money sent home by workers abroad.
Policy is tight. To defend the rupee and fight inflation, the central bank raised its policy rate to 8.75 percent in 2026, with inflation running around 6.8 percent.
The practical takeaway: the rupee is steadier than it was, but still exposed. A jump in global oil prices or a wobble in the IMF programme can push it weaker, which means more rupees for your pound.
The UK corridor, and why "undial" still matters
The money flowing from Britain to Sri Lanka is a big part of this story, and it has an unusual history.
Around 150,000 Sri Lankan-born people live in the UK, most of them British Tamils who came during and after the civil war, concentrated in London boroughs like Harrow and Tooting. The UK is one of the largest sources of remittances to the island.
Those remittances hit a record $8.08 billion in 2025 and are the main reason the central bank has been able to rebuild reserves.
Here is the twist. During the crisis, families abandoned banks for "undial", an old trust-based network that pays out in Colombo without money crossing the border, because it beat the official rate. To win that money back, the central bank paid a bonus of Rs 8 to Rs 10 per dollar on formal transfers.
Once the rupee was allowed to float, the black-market gap closed and those bonuses ended in 2023. Today the formal rate and the street rate are close, so the reason to use a licensed provider is safety and price, not a special incentive.
Receiving money in Sri Lanka: the tax rules
This is the part generic rate pages skip, and it reassures most senders while catching out a few.
Family support is tax-free. Money sent to relatives for living costs, healthcare or education is treated as family support, not income, and is not taxed in Sri Lanka. Sending it across the border does not trigger a bill in the UK or Sri Lanka.
The exception is resident freelancers. Since April 2025, a Sri Lankan resident who earns foreign currency by providing services to overseas clients pays a 15 percent tax on that income, above a tax-free allowance of Rs 1.8 million a year.
That 15 percent is a tax on earnings, not on a gift. Officials have been explicit that it does not touch ordinary family remittances from the diaspora.
None of this is tax advice. The rules have thresholds and exceptions, so take professional advice on a large or unusual transfer, or on freelance income.
Should you send now or wait?
Because the rupee is far weaker than it was, some people wonder whether it will recover, or weaken further. Here is the factual picture, not advice.
The big move has already happened. The 2022 reset is done, and analysts describe the rupee as stable but still vulnerable, rather than poised for a big rebound.
Day to day it drifts on oil prices, IMF review news and reserve data, none of which you can reliably time. If your family needs the money, the safest approach is to send when they need it and focus on getting the best provider rate, which you control.
For a large payment on a known future date, such as a property purchase, some people use a forward contract to fix today's rate in advance. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost before committing.
GBP to LKR: frequently asked questions
The mid-market rate today is about Rs 448.94 to the pound, which is the benchmark. The best rate you can actually get is whichever provider in the comparison above delivers the most rupees after fees. It updates live and is ranked by exactly that.
Right now one pound is worth about Rs 448.94 on the mid-market rate. The rupee floats, so the rate moves through the day. The figure above and the rate card refresh live.
Because of the 2022 economic crisis. Sri Lanka defaulted on its foreign debt, and the rupee roughly halved in value against major currencies. A pound went from about Rs 246 in 2020 to around Rs 450 today. It has been broadly stable since, under an IMF programme.
At today's mid-market rate of Rs 448.94, £1,000 is about Rs 448,941.27. A real provider sends a little less once its rate and fee are applied, and a bank can be about Rs 17,000 worse than a mid-market specialist, so compare the after-fee amounts above.
No. Money sent to relatives for support is treated as family support, not income, and is not taxed in Sri Lanka. A separate 15 percent tax, introduced in April 2025, applies only to residents earning foreign currency from freelance or remote work, not to family remittances. This is general information, not tax advice.
Specialists like Wise, Taptap Send and Remitly generally beat high-street banks, using the mid-market rate (or close to it) with low or zero upfront fees, while banks hide 3 to 5 percent in the exchange rate and add wire fees. Compare the rupees that actually arrive in the table above.
The pound reached about Rs 467 against the rupee in 2026, close to its all-time high. Because the rupee reset to a much weaker level after the 2022 crisis, the record highs are all recent rather than from the distant past.
During the 2022 crisis informal undial networks did beat the official rate, which is why the central bank paid a bonus to bring money back into banks. Since the rupee started floating, that gap has closed, so licensed providers now offer both a competitive rate and legal protection. Informal channels carry no safeguards if something goes wrong.
