Sending money from the UAE to Egypt

Our live price comparison can't quote UAE-origin transfers yet, but this is one of the world's biggest money corridors — around 1 million Egyptians live and work in the UAE, and Egypt is one of the largest receivers of remittances on earth, with the Gulf sending home a huge share of the total. The providers below are verified to operate this route. Since Egypt floated the pound in March 2024, the old black-market rate gap has largely closed, so receiving through a licensed provider now gives a fair rate. Rates and fees are still set by each provider and must be confirmed on their own site before you send.

These providers are verified to serve the UAE–Egypt route, but live exchange rates and fees are set by each provider and are not shown here — confirm them on the provider's own site before you send. Most money sent from the UAE to Egypt lands straight in an Egyptian bank account — and Egypt's InstaPay network now credits many inbound transfers in seconds. Family transfers also commonly go to a Vodafone Cash mobile wallet, or are collected as cash at a bank, exchange office or Fawry counter. The headline fee is only part of the picture — what really decides the cost is the margin added to the exchange rate, so always compare the pounds that actually arrive, not just the upfront fee.

01

Why UAE to Egypt shows no live prices yet

Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of those providers currently quote transfers that start in the UAE, so the route comes back empty even though real services move billions of dollars on it every year.

Until we can pull live UAE rates, this page lists providers verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat the page as a shortlist, not a quote — and always confirm the rate and fee on the provider's own site before you commit.

02

How the money reaches Egypt

The most common option is a direct deposit to an Egyptian bank account, which needs the recipient's name and their IBAN (Egyptian IBANs start with EG). Egypt's central-bank InstaPay network now credits many inbound remittances almost instantly. Family transfers also very often go to a Vodafone Cash (or Etisalat/Orange Cash) mobile wallet keyed to the recipient's phone number, while cash can be collected at bank branches, exchange offices and the Fawry network.

Bank deposit / InstaPay — recipient's name + Egyptian IBAN (EG…)
Seconds–1 day
Mobile wallet — Vodafone / Etisalat / Orange Cash, by phone number
Usually minutes
Cash pickup — bank, exchange office or Fawry, with ID + reference
Usually minutes

InstaPay bank credits and wallet payouts are usually the fastest, landing within minutes; a traditional correspondent-bank transfer can take one to three business days depending on the receiving bank.

03

What sending money to Egypt really costs

The headline fee is only part of the cost. On any transfer, the bigger number is usually hidden inside the exchange rate — so it's worth knowing where each slice goes before you send.

01

The exchange-rate margin

The gap between the real mid-market rate and the rate you're offered. Since Egypt floated the pound in March 2024, the official and street rates have broadly converged, so a licensed provider now gives a fair rate. Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, the pound rate mostly tracks the dollar — but margins still vary, and on a larger transfer this usually outweighs any upfront fee.

02

Skip the black market

The old parallel-market premium that tempted people to use informal channels has largely gone. Informal transfers are illegal, carry no protection and now offer little or no rate advantage — receiving through a bank or licensed provider is both safer and competitive.

03

VAT on the fee

In the UAE, the 5 percent VAT applies only to a fixed transfer fee, not to the exchange-rate margin or the money you send. It's a few fils on the flat fee, so it barely moves the total.

04

Tax and rules on each side

Sending from the UAE

The UAE charges no personal income tax and has no exchange controls, so you can send money abroad freely as family support or a gift. You'll need a valid Emirates ID to remit, and providers run standard identity checks. The 5 percent VAT applies only to a fixed transfer fee, never to the amount you send.

Receiving in Egypt

Money received from family abroad as support or a gift is generally not taxed in the recipient's hands in Egypt — personal remittances aren't treated as income. Egypt actively encourages inflows through official banking channels, which is why the central bank rolled out instant InstaPay crediting of inbound remittances. Money received as payment for work or business can be taxable, so keep a simple record that a transfer is family support.

05

Funding your transfer without overpaying

Paying from a UAE bank account or a debit card is usually the cheapest way to fund a transfer. Funding with a credit card is often treated by the card issuer as a cash advance, which can trigger a one-off fee and interest from day one with no grace period — quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive. Check how your card treats the payment before you use it, and have your Emirates ID to hand for the identity check.

06

Scams to watch on this route

Most traps target the recipient with a fake message or a fake windfall. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.

The wallet "verification" scam

Rule: to receive money into Vodafone Cash you never share your wallet PIN or a one-time code. Anyone calling or texting "from Vodafone" or "from the bank" asking for your PIN or OTP is a fraudster — never share it.

Black-market "better rate" offers

Rule: since the 2024 float there's no real rate advantage to informal channels, and they're illegal and unprotected. Ignore anyone offering a special off-the-books rate — use a licensed provider.

Family "emergency" requests

Rule: an urgent money request that appears to come from a relative may be an impersonator. Confirm directly on a number you already know before sending anything.

Confirm before you send

Rule: check the recipient's name, IBAN or wallet number against details they sent you in writing, and use a licensed provider rather than a stranger offering a "better rate" off-platform.

How most people send money from the UAE to Egypt

Takeaway

For most people sending money from the UAE to Egypt, the simplest route is a verified provider paying straight into the recipient's Egyptian bank account or InstaPay, or to their Vodafone Cash wallet — fast, familiar and easy to track. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, treat this page as a vetted shortlist — then judge each option by the pounds that actually arrive after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's IBAN or wallet number before you send.

UAE to Egypt transfers: frequently asked questions

Our live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a few other major sending countries. It doesn't yet quote transfers that start in the UAE, so instead of an empty table we list providers verified to serve the corridor. Confirm the live rate and fee on each provider's own site before you send.

Increasingly, yes. Egypt's central-bank InstaPay network now credits many inbound remittances to a bank account almost instantly, and several providers pay into a Vodafone Cash (or Etisalat/Orange Cash) mobile wallet using the recipient's phone number. For a bank or InstaPay deposit you'll usually need the recipient's Egyptian IBAN, which starts with EG.

For a bank or InstaPay deposit, the recipient's full name and their Egyptian IBAN (starting EG). For a mobile wallet, their registered phone number. For cash pickup, their full name as on their ID plus a reference number. You'll also need your own valid Emirates ID to send.

InstaPay bank credits and mobile-wallet payouts are usually available within minutes, and cash pickup is available within minutes too. A traditional correspondent-bank transfer can take from a few hours up to one to three business days, depending on the receiving bank. The provider will show an estimated delivery time before you confirm.

Egypt floated the pound in March 2024, which sharply weakened it against the dollar and dirham but closed the old black-market gap. In practice that means official channels now offer a fair, near-market rate, so there's no longer a reason to risk informal transfers. Always compare the pounds that actually arrive, since each provider still sets its own margin.

Money received from family abroad as support or a gift is generally not taxed in the recipient's hands in Egypt, as personal remittances aren't treated as income. The UAE also charges no tax on the amount you send abroad. Money received as payment for work or business can be taxable, so it's worth keeping a simple record that a transfer is family support.

It's one of the first names people think of, and it doesn't work in this direction. You can't pay for a Wise transfer with dirhams.

Wise's own currency list is split in two. AED sits in the column headed "you can only send money to these currencies", not in the list of currencies you can send from. Its UAE links point at the UK service, because there is no UAE sending flow behind them.

So Wise isn't an option for money leaving the UAE. It works the other way round: someone abroad, paying in a currency Wise does send from, can use it to send money to a UAE account.

Paying from a UAE bank account or a debit card is usually cheapest. Avoid funding with a credit card where you can — issuers often treat it as a cash advance, adding a one-off fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the upfront fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.
