Juba Express Review Verdict

Our verdict

Juba Express is a money transfer service built around one community: the Somali diaspora sending money home from the UK. It has run since 2009, and its home route is the UK to Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.

Its strengths are reach and speed. Money lands in seconds on Somali mobile wallets such as EVC Plus, cash can be collected in US dollars across Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Bosaso, and support is in Somali as well as English.

The catch is regulation and clarity. It is a Small Payment Institution, so your money carries less protection than a bank or a larger authorised firm, and the price is not shown until you are inside the app.

Best for

  • Sending to family in Somalia, Somaliland or Puntland by mobile money or cash
  • Recipients with no bank account who collect cash in US dollars
  • People who value a Somali-run service with Somali-language support

Look elsewhere if

  • You want the lowest total cost on a digital wallet transfer
  • You need to see the exact fee and rate before signing up
  • You want bank-style protection on the money you send

How Much Does Juba Express Cost?

A fee you only see at checkout

Juba Express markets low, transparent fees, but it does not publish a price list, and there is no open calculator to check before you sign up. You see the fee only once you start a transfer inside the app.

The best guide we found is indirect. WorldRemit, which pays out through Juba Express branches in Somalia, charges about £2.99 to send £1,000. Juba's own fee likely sits near that, but it is not confirmed.

A rate margin you cannot check upfront

The rest of the cost is the exchange rate. Juba's own terms say the rate includes a mark-up it sets and profits from, which is normal for the trade, but the exact margin is not published.

For this corridor a typical margin runs about 1.5 to 2 percent over the mid-market rate. The rate and fee are fixed at the moment you confirm, so the quote will not move while the transfer processes.

03

Worked Example: Sending £1,000 to Somalia

Somalia runs on the US dollar, so transfers are paid out in dollars, not Somali shillings. This models the cost using the live mid-market rate of 1.324 dollars to the pound on 1 July 2026, with a typical margin. Rates move daily, so treat it as a snapshot.

Provider Rate (USD per £) Fee Recipient gets
Mid-market rate 1.324 none ~$1,324
Juba Express (modelled) ~1.30 ~£1 to £3 ~$1,290 to $1,300

Read it like this. Against a mid-market benchmark of about 1,324 dollars, our modelled Juba transfer lands your recipient roughly 1,290 to 1,300 dollars, once a small margin and fee come out.

The honest caveat is that these are modelled figures, not a live quote, because Juba shows no price before sign-up. So the gap to mid-market is a fair estimate for the corridor, not a number we could scrape from the app.

Costs to watch

  • No public calculator, so you cannot price a transfer before you sign up
  • The fee here is a rival's proxy, not Juba's own published figure
  • Low-fee wallet apps can deliver a little more on a digital transfer

Where and How Can You Send Money?

Somalia and the Horn of Africa, in depth

This is a specialist route, and the payout network is its real advantage. We found options built for recipients who have no bank account, from instant mobile money to cash in hand.

Mobile money is the quickest. Funds reach EVC Plus, Zaad, Sahal or e-Dahab wallets within seconds, at any hour. Cash can be collected in US dollars at Juba branches in cities such as Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Bosaso.

Bank deposits are also supported, routed to local banks such as Premier Bank. Juba is trusted enough that WorldRemit and Transfer Galaxy pay out through its branches too, a sign of its standing in the corridor.

If Somalia is your route, it pays to see how the market prices it, so compare the field on the send money to Somalia route before you commit.

Speed and access

Method Speed
Mobile money such as EVC Plus Within seconds
Cash pickup Usually within 30 minutes
Bank deposit Minutes to 1 to 2 business days

You send from the Juba Express app on iOS or Android, or from the website. Funding works by debit card, credit card or a direct bank transfer, and a card may carry its own processing cost. We could not confirm Apple Pay or Google Pay.

05

Who Is Juba Express Best For?

Families sending to unbanked recipients

This is the core case. If your recipient has no bank account but does have a mobile number, money reaches their EVC Plus or Zaad wallet in seconds, or they collect dollars in cash at a branch.

You also get support in Somali as well as English, which many rivals cannot offer.

People who value speed and reach over price

A good fit. Cash pickup across Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland, plus instant mobile money, is hard to beat for reaching relatives in provincial towns.

That reach, not the price, is the reason to choose it.

Cost-first and protection-first senders

Less of a fit. If you want the lowest wallet cost, a low-fee app can edge it. If you want bank-style protection, its Small Payment Institution status means less cover than a larger firm.

You also cannot see the price before you sign up, which some senders will dislike.

When another provider fits better

  • You want the lowest total cost on a mobile wallet transfer
  • You need to see the exact fee and rate before committing
  • You want stronger protection on funds while a transfer is pending
06

Juba Express Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Long-established Somali specialist, running since 2009
  • Instant payout to EVC Plus, Zaad, Sahal and e-Dahab wallets
  • Cash pickup in US dollars across Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Bosaso
  • Somali-language support and a diaspora focus
  • Trusted enough to carry WorldRemit and Transfer Galaxy payouts

Cons

  • A Small Payment Institution, so not required to safeguard funds, and no FSCS
  • No published fee or rate, and no calculator before sign-up
  • Reviews flag transfers held for verification and slow replies
  • Rarely the cheapest, as low-fee apps can beat it on wallet cost
  • Review signal is thin and contradictory

Is Juba Express Safe?

Who runs it

We checked the FCA Register. Juba Express is the trading name of Juba Express Limited, registered as a Small Payment Institution under firm reference number 518352, holding money-remittance permission.

The firm has been on the FCA register since 2010 and incorporated in 2009, and is based in London. It has served the Somali community for more than fifteen years.

How your money is protected

This is the part to understand carefully. Juba Express is registered as a Small Payment Institution, which is not a bank and not the larger Authorised Payment Institution category.

That distinction matters for your money. A Small Payment Institution is not legally required to safeguard, or ring-fence, customer funds the way a larger authorised firm must. We could not confirm whether Juba chooses to do so anyway.

There is no FSCS protection either way, because it is not a bank. In plain terms, if the firm failed while your transfer was in progress, there is no guarantee your money would be ring-fenced or returned. Transfers usually clear in minutes, which shrinks that window, but the gap is real.

Checks and security

Expect firm onboarding. We found Juba verifies you with photo ID and a selfie, monitors transactions, and can ask for proof of source of funds on larger or repeat sends, which may hold a payment until you reply.

Those held-payment checks are a recurring complaint in reviews, so keep your documents ready for a bigger transfer. The recipient's name must match their ID exactly for a cash collection, so enter it with care.

08

Using Juba Express: App, Funding and Support

Getting started. Download the Juba Express app on iOS or Android, or use the website, then verify your identity with a photo ID and a selfie. You add a recipient by their wallet number, cash-pickup details or bank account before you send.

Paying. Fund a transfer with a debit card, a credit card or a direct bank transfer. A bank transfer usually keeps the cost down, while a card can add its own processing fee.

Support. Help runs Monday to Saturday, roughly 09:00 to 18:00 UK time, by phone, WhatsApp and email, in English and Somali. Some reviewers note there is no cover outside those hours, so time a query accordingly.

09

Juba Express Customer Reviews and Reputation

We read the reviews rather than only the scores, and the picture here is thin and mixed. The app page claims more than 125,000 five-star reviews, but that is a self-reported marketing figure, not an independent score.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot 1.9 to 4.2/5 (conflicting) ~18 Jul 2026
Apple App Store Marketing claim only "125,000+" claimed Jul 2026
Google Play Not confirmed Not confirmed Jul 2026

What people praise: fast payouts within seconds, the convenience of the app over a branch visit, and multilingual Somali support.

What goes wrong: the recurring complaint is a transfer held or blocked for verification, sometimes with slow replies, and grumbles about pricing being unclear. It matters when family are waiting, so send any documents promptly if you are asked.

How Does Juba Express Compare?

On this route the real test is the dollars received and how fast they arrive, and you can see the wider field in our money transfer comparison.

Two rivals frame the choice. Our Dahabshiil review covers the largest Somali remittance network, which often matches or beats Juba on rate with far greater reach, while our Taptap Send review looks at a low-fee app that tends to win on pure wallet cost. The other Somali operators price much the same, so our Amal, Iftin Express and Tawakal reviews are worth weighing.

Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you send. Then weigh Juba's reach and Somali support against the lower cost a digital app can offer, and the protection gap a Small Payment Institution carries.

11

Final Verdict: Is Juba Express Worth It?

Juba Express is a legitimate, long-established way to send money to Somalia, built by a Somali team for that community. Payout is genuinely strong: seconds to a mobile wallet, cash in dollars across the country, and support in Somali as well as English.

What holds it back is protection and clarity. It is a Small Payment Institution, so it is not required to safeguard your money and there is no FSCS cover. The price is hidden until checkout, reviews carry a run of held-transfer complaints, and low-fee apps can deliver a little more.

For Somalia remittance it earns 3 out of 5. Use it for its reach, speed and Somali support, but compare the total cost against a low-fee app first, keep your ID ready in case a transfer is held, and go in knowing the money carries less protection than a bank.
