Amal Money Transfer Review Verdict

Our verdict

Amal Money Transfer is a service rooted in the Somali hawala tradition, aimed at the diaspora sending money home from the UK. Its parent group traces back to 1997, and its home route is the UK to Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Its strengths are heritage and reach. Money can be collected in US dollars across cities such as Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Bosaso, it reaches Somali mobile wallets like EVC Plus, and it comes from a network built for this exact journey.

The catch is proof. It is a Small Payment Institution, so your money carries less protection than a bank, the Somalia price is hidden until you sign up, and we could find almost no independent reviews to lean on.

  • Sending to family in Somalia, Somaliland or Puntland by cash or mobile money
  • Recipients with no bank account who collect cash in US dollars
  • People who value a Somali service with hawala heritage

Look elsewhere if

How Much Does Amal Money Transfer Cost?

A Somalia price you only see after sign-up

Amal leads with a zero-fees message, but that does not tell the whole story. Its own FAQ says fees vary by destination, amount and payout method, and are shown only once you are signed in.

We saw the gap for ourselves. Amal openly publishes its rate to Bangladesh, another route it pushes hard, yet the Somalia fee and rate stay behind a login. So hiding the Somalia price is a choice, not a technical limit.

A rate margin you cannot check upfront

The rest of the cost sits in the exchange rate, and that margin is not published for Somalia. For this corridor a mark-up of roughly 1 to 3 percent over the mid-market rate is typical.

Because you cannot see a quote before you register, there is no way to price a Somalia transfer in advance. You have to sign up first, then read the rate and fee at checkout, which some senders will find frustrating.

03

Worked Example: Sending £1,000 to Somalia

Somalia runs on the US dollar, so transfers are paid out in dollars, not Somali shillings. This models the cost using the live mid-market rate of 1.3306 dollars to the pound on 2 July 2026, with a typical margin. Rates move daily, so treat it as a snapshot.

Provider Rate (USD per £) Fee Recipient gets
Mid-market rate 1.3306 none ~$1,331
Amal (modelled) ~1.30 to 1.31 not shown until checkout ~$1,300 to $1,310

Read it like this. Against a mid-market benchmark of about 1,331 dollars, our modelled Amal transfer lands your recipient roughly 1,300 to 1,310 dollars, once a margin and any fee come out.

The honest caveat is that this is a modelled figure, not a live quote, because Amal shows no Somalia price before sign-up. So the gap to mid-market is a fair corridor estimate, not a number we could scrape from the app.

Costs to watch

  • No public calculator, so you cannot price a Somalia transfer before you sign up
  • The zero-fees headline does not match Amal's own FAQ on Somalia
  • Low-fee wallet apps can deliver a little more on a digital transfer

Where and How Can You Send Money?

Somalia and the Horn of Africa, in depth

This is a specialist route, and the payout network is the real draw. We found options built for recipients with no bank account, from cash in hand to instant mobile money.

Cash can be collected in US dollars at Amal locations in cities such as Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso and Garowe. The network is trusted enough that the UN refugee agency has used it to pay out in Mogadishu.

Mobile money is the fastest option. Funds reach Somali wallets such as EVC Plus, Zaad and Sahal within minutes, and bank deposits to local accounts are supported too. Your recipient needs only a phone number or ID, not a bank account.

Beyond Somalia, Amal also markets a UK to Bangladesh service, paying into local banks such as NCC and Shahjalal. Somalia and the Horn of Africa remain its core, though.

If Somalia is your route, it pays to see how the wider market prices it, so compare the field on the send money to Somalia route before you commit.

Speed and access

Method Speed
Mobile money such as EVC Plus Within minutes
Cash pickup Usually within minutes
Bank deposit 1 to 2 business days

You send from the Amal app on iOS or Android, or from the website. You fund a transfer by bank transfer or a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card, and a card may add its own cost. We could not confirm Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Who Is Amal Money Transfer Best For?

Families sending to unbanked recipients

This is the core case. If your recipient has no bank account but has a phone, money can reach their EVC Plus or Zaad wallet in minutes, or they can collect dollars in cash at an Amal location.

You are also dealing with a service built for the Somali community, with a hawala heritage that a general app cannot match.

People who value reach over price

A fair fit. Cash pickup across Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland, plus mobile money, reaches relatives in provincial towns that app-first rivals may not serve as well.

That reach, not the price, is the reason to choose it.

Cost-first and reassurance-first senders

Less of a fit. You cannot see the Somalia price before you sign up, a low-fee app can beat it on cost, and there is almost no public review record to reassure you.

For a first transfer with a new provider, that missing track record is worth weighing.

When another provider fits better

  • You want to see the exact fee and rate before committing
  • You want the lowest total cost on a mobile wallet transfer
  • You want a provider with a strong, public review record

Amal Money Transfer Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Rooted in the Somali hawala network, with deep Horn of Africa reach
  • Cash pickup in US dollars across Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso and Garowe
  • Fast mobile money to wallets such as EVC Plus, Zaad and Sahal

  • No published Somalia fee or rate before you sign up
  • Almost no independent reviews, on Trustpilot or the app stores
  • A zero-fees headline that its own FAQ walks back
  • Low-fee apps can deliver a little more on the same transfer
07

Is Amal Money Transfer Safe?

Who runs it

We checked the FCA Register. Amal Money Transfer is a trading name of Amal UK Ltd, registered as a Small Payment Institution under firm reference number 525548, holding money-remittance permission.

One point to get right. A separate, older firm called Amal Express Ltd is no longer authorised by the FCA. This review is about Amal UK Ltd, the currently registered company behind amaluk.com, not that defunct firm.

How your money is protected

This is the part to read carefully. Amal UK Ltd is a Small Payment Institution, which is not a bank and not the larger Authorised Payment Institution category.

That distinction matters for your money. A Small Payment Institution is not legally required to safeguard, or ring-fence, customer funds the way a larger authorised firm must. We could not confirm whether Amal does so voluntarily.

There is no FSCS protection either, because it is not a bank. In plain terms, if the firm failed while your transfer was in progress, there is no guarantee your money would be ring-fenced or returned. Most transfers clear quickly, which shrinks that window, but the gap is real.

Checks and security

Expect firm onboarding. We found Amal verifies your identity, monitors transactions and can ask for proof of source of funds on larger sends, which may hold a payment until you reply.

It is supervised by HMRC for anti-money-laundering as a money-service business, and registered with the ICO for data protection. The recipient's name must match their ID for a cash collection, so enter it with care.

08

Using Amal Money Transfer: App, Funding and Support

Getting started. Download the Amal app on iOS or Android, or use the amaluk.com website, then verify your identity. You add a recipient by their wallet number, cash-pickup details or bank account before you send.

Paying. Fund a transfer with a bank transfer or a Visa or Mastercard card. A bank transfer usually keeps the cost down, while a card can add its own processing fee.

Support. Amal offers help by phone and email, and its diaspora focus means Somali-speaking support is a natural fit, though we could not confirm the exact hours.

09

Amal Money Transfer Customer Reviews and Reputation

We look at the reviews, not only the scores, and here the striking thing is how little there is to read. Amal has no Trustpilot profile we could find, and both app stores show too few ratings to score.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot No profile found 0 Jul 2026
Apple App Store Not enough ratings Too few to score Jul 2026
Google Play Unrated ~100+ installs Jul 2026

That absence cuts both ways. There is no pattern of complaints to warn you off, but there is also no body of happy customers to reassure you, which is unusual for an established remittance brand.

So judge it on the fundamentals instead. Its regulation, its payout network and its pricing approach matter more here than a star rating, because the star rating barely exists yet.

10

How Does Amal Money Transfer Compare?

On this route the real test is the dollars received and how fast they land, and you can see the wider field in our money transfer comparison.

Two rivals frame the choice. Our Dahabshiil review covers the largest Somali network, which usually beats Amal on reach, digital polish and published pricing.

For a closer like-for-like, our Juba Express review looks at another Somali specialist that, like Amal, keeps its price behind a sign-up. Two more names on the same corridor sit close on price: our Iftin Express and Tawakal reviews cover fellow Somali money-transfer operators.

Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you send. Then weigh Amal's reach and heritage against the price and clarity a rival can offer.

11

Final Verdict: Is Amal Money Transfer Worth It?

Amal Money Transfer is a legitimate, hawala-rooted way to send money to Somalia, backed by a network built for that journey. Payout is its strength: cash in dollars across the country, fast mobile money, and reach into provincial towns.

What holds it back is proof. It is a Small Payment Institution, so it is not required to safeguard your money and there is no FSCS cover. The Somalia price is hidden until sign-up, and there is almost no public review record to lean on.

For Somalia remittance it earns 2.5 out of 5. It sits a notch below closer rivals like Juba Express and Iftin Express, mainly because you cannot see its Somalia pricing upfront and there are so few reviews to judge it by.

Use it for its reach and Somali heritage if that matters to you, but get a live quote inside the app, compare the total against a low-fee alternative, and go in knowing the money carries less protection than a bank.

Amal Money Transfer FAQs

It is legitimate. Amal Money Transfer is a trading name of Amal UK Ltd, an FCA-registered Small Payment Institution under firm reference number 525548.

Note the limits, though. A Small Payment Institution is not required to safeguard your funds, and there is no FSCS cover, so it carries less protection than a bank.

It does not publish the Somalia price. The fee and rate show only after you sign in, with no calculator first. Amal does publish its Bangladesh rate, so the Somalia gate is a choice, and a margin on the exchange rate applies on top.

Usually fast. Cash pickup and mobile money to wallets such as EVC Plus or Zaad typically arrive within minutes. Bank deposits to local accounts can take one to two business days.

A range built for unbanked recipients. You can send to mobile wallets such as EVC Plus, Zaad and Sahal, collect cash in US dollars at locations in Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso and Garowe, or pay into a local bank account.
