Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about zł5.0125 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Polish zloty is one of the most-searched rates in Britain, watched by a Polish community that is still the country's second-largest overseas-born group, and by anyone paying a mortgage back home, buying property or moving savings before a return to Poland. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet 2.5 to 3.5 percent margin inside the exchange rate.

As of 6 August 2026, 1 GBP = zł5.0125, down 0.81% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to PLN rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = zł5.0125. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer history.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. The pound's all-time high against the zloty was 6.02, on 7 March 2022, in the panic that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, when investors dumped Central European currencies. The pound had also traded above 6.00 back in November 2015, before the Brexit vote.

The multi-year low came at 4.60, in August 2017, the bottom of sterling's long slide after the 2016 referendum.

Against that history, a rate near 5 zloty sits in the middle of the last decade's range. A pound bought around 5.34 zloty on average in 2016 and about 5.05 today, so sterling is down roughly 5 percent over ten years, but it has still recovered nearly 10 percent from that 2017 low. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

How much is your money in Polish zloty?

At today's mid-market rate of zł5.0125 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee zloty each one delivers today.

Polish zloty in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a zloty amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in zloty, such as a Polish flat, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Zloty amountIn pounds (mid-market)
zł100£19.95
zł1,000£199.50
zł10,000£1,995.01
zł50,000£9,975.04
zł100,000£19,950.09

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Poland really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on a regular mortgage payment or family support it adds up fast over a year.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. Industry data puts the average all-in cost of a UK to Poland transfer at about 3.8 percent, but the method you choose swings that hugely. A bank-to-bank deposit through a specialist can cost well under 2.5 percent, while a cash pick-up can run to 7 percent or more.

Take a £1,000 transfer. A high-street bank charging roughly a 2.75 percent margin plus a £20 wire fee lands the recipient around zł4,810. Send the same £1,000 through a mid-market specialist such as Wise, which uses the real rate and a small upfront fee, and the recipient gets close to zł5,025.

That gap is about 215 zloty, roughly £42, on a single £1,000 transfer, before you have made a habit of it. On monthly support, that is real money left on the table.

One practical point for this corridor. Bank-to-bank transfer straight to a Polish IBAN is both the cheapest and the fastest route, and most transfers land the same or next day. Paying for a cash pick-up or a wallet top-up usually costs more, so compare the zloty that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to PLN rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to PLN is not really a direct UK-versus-Poland story. It is a euro and dollar story that the zloty rides along with.

1. The euro and dollar cross. The zloty is traded mostly against the euro and the US dollar, so GBP to PLN is effectively a synthetic cross of how sterling and the zloty each perform against those two. More than half the zloty's trade weight is the euro, and the health of German manufacturing is a strong proxy for it. When the eurozone slows or global risk rises, the zloty tends to weaken and GBP to PLN drifts up, even with nothing changing in Britain.

2. The interest-rate gap, unusually closed. Normally the gap between the Bank of England and Poland's central bank pulls money one way or the other. As of mid-2026 that gap has all but vanished: both sit at 3.75 percent. With no yield advantage on either side, this driver is quiet for now, which leaves the euro cross and risk sentiment in charge.

3. Inflation. Polish inflation cooled to about 2.5 percent by mid-2026, right on the central bank's target, while UK inflation sat a touch higher near 2.8 percent. Broadly similar, with a slight edge to the zloty over time.

4. The Ukraine risk premium. Poland borders a war zone, so the zloty carries a built-in geopolitical risk premium. Any escalation in the region tends to weaken it quickly against the pound, which is exactly what drove the 2022 record high.

The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the euro and global risk mood, not just UK headlines. For the longer trend, watch Polish inflation and the war next door.

06

The gift-tax trap, property rules and sending money into Poland

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Poland corridor it is where the costly mistakes hide.

The SD-Z2 gift-tax trap. The UK does not tax the person receiving a gift, but Poland does. Send a large sum to close family in Poland, a spouse, child, parent or sibling, and they can receive it completely tax-free, but only on one strict condition: the recipient must report the transfer to the Polish tax office on Form SD-Z2 within six months, and the money must arrive by documented bank transfer, not cash. Miss that six-month window and the exemption is lost, with tax then charged at rates from about 3 to 20 percent. This is general information, not tax advice.

Buying property after Brexit. Because the UK left the EU, British buyers are now treated as non-EEA "third-country" nationals under Polish law. You can generally buy a standalone flat freely, but a house, land, agricultural or border-zone property now needs a permit from Poland's Ministry of the Interior (MSWiA), which can add two to six months to a purchase. Plan the timeline before you commit.

The SEPA and IBAN trap. The UK is still in the SEPA payments area, but SEPA only carries euros. Sending pounds to Poland "via SEPA" means converting GBP to EUR, then EUR to PLN at the other end, so you pay an FX margin twice. A direct GBP to PLN specialist avoids that double hit. Separately, if a Polish company refuses your UK "GB" IBAN, that is IBAN discrimination and it breaches EU payment rules.

Carrying cash is a false economy. Beyond the theft risk and lack of any protection, moving more than 10,000 euros in cash across the EU border must be declared, and undocumented cash also disqualifies your family from the SD-Z2 tax exemption. The documented bank route is both safer and, once the tax is counted, usually cheaper.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. Through the first half of 2026 the pound climbed from about 4.81 zloty in February to near 5.05 in July, so sterling is at the stronger end of its recent range.

Published forecasts lean the other way from here. Aggregated bank research collected by ExchangeRates.org.uk points to a mild decline, in the region of 4.83 by late 2026 and toward 4.67 through 2027, on the view that the zloty consolidates its gains. Those are projections, not promises.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Polish property completion, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate for up to a year or more ahead for a deposit. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to PLN: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of zł5.0125, £1,000 is about zł5,012.51. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee zloty in the table above.

The pound reached an all-time high of about 6.02 zloty on 7 March 2022, in the risk-off panic after Russia invaded Ukraine. It had also traded above 6.00 in November 2015. Today it sits near zł5.0125, in the middle of the last decade's range.

In the short term, yes: the pound rose from about 4.81 zloty in February 2026 to near 5.05 by July. Over the longer run, though, most institutional forecasts expect it to ease back toward the 4.70 to 4.80 range through 2027. Forecasts are unreliable, so treat that as context, not a prediction.

The UK sender pays no tax. The Polish recipient can be liable for Polish gift tax, but close family (spouse, children, parents, siblings) receive it tax-free if they file Form SD-Z2 with the Polish tax office within six months and the money arrives by documented bank transfer. Miss that step and tax applies. This is general information, not tax advice.

A bank-to-bank transfer to a Polish IBAN through a mid-market specialist such as Wise, Remitly or XE is usually cheapest and fastest. They apply the real rate with a small, visible fee, while high-street banks bury a margin of up to 3.5 percent in a "free" transfer. Avoid cash pick-up, which carries the highest fees. Always compare the zloty that actually arrive.

Yes, but the rules changed. UK citizens are now treated as non-EU nationals. You can buy a standalone flat freely, but a house, land or a border-zone property needs a permit from Poland's Ministry of the Interior (MSWiA), which can add two to six months to the purchase.
