Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about Ft424.33 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Hungarian forint is watched by a settled UK-Hungarian community of more than 100,000 people, and by anyone paying tuition in Budapest, buying a place near Lake Balaton or supporting family back home. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet margin inside the exchange rate, and Hungary adds a conversion tax on top that most rate pages never mention.

As of 25 August 2026, 1 GBP = Ft424.33, little changed on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to HUF rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = Ft424.33. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer history.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. The pound's all-time high against the forint was 490.00 forint, on 12 July 2022, at the height of the European energy crisis, with the war in Ukraine next door and Hungarian inflation soaring. A more recent local peak came at 456.09 on 8 March 2026.

The multi-year low sat far lower, at 249.58 forint, back on 2 May 2016, in the run-up to the Brexit vote when the pound was under heavy selling pressure.

Against that history, a rate near 419 forint sits well below the 2022 record but far above where sterling traded a decade ago. The pound averaged about 374 forint in July 2016 and about 419 today, so it is up roughly 12 percent over ten years, a steady, structural slide in the forint interrupted by sharp spikes. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

How much is your money in Hungarian forint?

At today's mid-market rate of Ft424.33 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee forint each one delivers today.

Hungarian forint in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a forint amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in forint, such as a Budapest flat, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Ft10,000£23.57
Ft50,000£117.83

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Hungary really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on regular family support or tuition it adds up fast over a year.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. Wise passes the real mid-market rate and charges a small upfront fee, starting around 0.33 percent for GBP to HUF. Revolut gives the mid-market rate on weekdays but adds a 1 percent markup at weekends. Remitly builds a spread of roughly 0.5 to 3 percent into the rate, though it often waives its flat fee on larger transfers.

Take a £1,000 transfer. Through Wise, a fee of about £3.30 leaves £996.70 to convert, and at a mid-market 418 forint the recipient gets close to 416,620 forint. Through Remitly, above its fee-waiver threshold so no flat fee but a 1 percent rate margin, £1,000 converts at about 413.82 forint for roughly 413,820 forint.

That gap is about 2,800 forint, roughly £7, on a single £1,000 transfer, and it widens on a bank that buries a bigger margin. On monthly support, that is real money left on the table.

One point unique to this corridor. If the conversion happens inside Hungary, a statutory currency-conversion tax of 0.45 percent can be deducted before the money lands, so converting on the UK side with a specialist and sending forint direct to the recipient's account is usually both cheaper and faster. Compare the forint that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to HUF rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to HUF is not really a direct UK-versus-Hungary story. The forint is an exotic currency traded mostly against the euro and the dollar, so this rate behaves as a synthetic cross that the forint rides along with.

1. The interest-rate gap and the carry trade. This is the strongest driver. The Bank of England held its base rate at 3.75 percent on 18 June 2026, while Hungary's central bank, the MNB, cut to 6.00 percent on 24 June and has signalled further cuts through the summer. Hungary's rate once stood as high as 13 to 18 percent, and that yield used to reward investors for holding forint. As the gap narrows, that support fades and capital rotates out of the forint, pushing GBP to HUF up.

2. Inflation. Hungarian inflation cooled sharply to about 1.8 percent by May 2026, below the UK's 2.8 percent. Low inflation is what lets the MNB keep cutting rates, which in turn removes the forint's yield cushion.

3. Politics and EU funds. Hungary's access to EU cohesion and recovery money is repeatedly held up by rule-of-law disputes with Brussels. Signs the funds will be released strengthen the forint; deadlock weakens it. Friction between the Orbán government and the central bank adds its own volatility.

4. Trade and energy. Hungary is a small, open economy wired into German car and tech supply chains, and it is a net energy importer. When energy prices spike or German industry slows, the forint tends to weaken across the board, the pound included.

The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the euro, global risk mood and Hungarian rate decisions, not just UK headlines.

06

The conversion tax, cash limits and sending money into Hungary

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Hungary corridor it is where the costly surprises hide.

The currency-conversion tax. Hungary runs a Financial Transaction Tax on money movement. Since 1 October 2024 there is a supplementary tax specifically on currency conversion of 0.45 percent, capped at 20,000 forint per transaction. Banks pass it on, so a large transfer converted inside Hungary automatically shrinks by this margin. Converting on the UK side and sending forint direct usually sidesteps it.

The dual-rail IBAN trap. Hungary is in the SEPA area but has kept the forint, not the euro. A Hungarian account uses a 28-character IBAN beginning "HU", and the same IBAN handles both euros and forint. Send euros and it routes through SEPA; send forint and it routes through Hungary's domestic instant system. Send the wrong currency and the receiving bank can apply its own steep conversion fee.

Instant payout, once it lands. Hungary's domestic AFR network settles any forint transfer under 20 million forint 24/7 in under five seconds. So once a UK transfer is converted and handed to a local partner bank, the recipient typically sees it the same day.

Cash limits and declarations. Carry more than 10,000 euros in cash across the EU border and you must declare it to customs. Inside Hungary, business-to-business cash payments are capped at 1.5 million forint, about £3,500, per month, with a 20 percent penalty on any excess, so large purchases must go electronically. Informal channels such as hawala are heavily marginalised and carry severe legal risk under Hungarian tax law. The documented bank route is both safer and, once the rules are counted, usually cheaper.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. Over the past month the pound has traded between about 404 and 424 forint. Across the past year the range runs from a low near 403 to a high of 465, so at about 419 today sterling sits in the lower third of that range, meaning the forint is relatively strong right now.

Published forecasts lean the other way from here. CoinCodex's model projects a rise of around 5 percent toward 441 forint by the end of 2026. PoundF's statistical projections point to an average near 444 in October 2026, easing back toward 430 in early 2027. Commerzbank notes that if the Bank of England cuts to 3.25 percent by mid-2027 while the MNB pauses, that could cap the pound's upside.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Budapest property completion or a year of tuition, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate up to a year or two ahead. Given how sharply the forint spiked to 490 in 2022, that certainty can matter. Forward contracts are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to HUF: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of Ft424.33, £1,000 is about Ft424,332.15. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee forint in the table above.

The pound reached an all-time high of about 490 forint on 12 July 2022, during the European energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, with Hungarian inflation soaring. A more recent peak came at 456 in March 2026. Today it sits near Ft424.33, well below that record.

For physical cash in the UK, supermarkets such as Asda and the Post Office offer travel money at competitive retail rates with next-day collection. For sending money to a Hungarian bank account, digital providers such as Wise and Revolut generally give the most cost-effective mid-market rates, well ahead of high-street banks.

Hungary is in the EU but its currency is the forint, not the euro. Some hotels and larger retailers in Budapest will take euros, but they set their own conversion rate, which is almost always poor. Paying directly in forint is nearly always better value.

The UK sender pays no tax on the transfer itself. Hungary does levy a statutory transaction tax, including a supplementary 0.45 percent charge on currency conversion (capped at 20,000 forint) since October 2024, which banks pass on when the conversion happens inside Hungary. Any tax on the money as income or a gift is a separate matter. This is general information, not tax advice.

Less than you might think. More than 80 percent of Hungarians use electronic payments, and contactless cards and mobile wallets are accepted everywhere in the cities. Small forint notes are still handy for rural areas, market stalls and tipping, so carry a little cash alongside a card.
