Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about lei6.3080 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Romanian leu matters to one of Britain's largest migrant communities, more than half a million Romanian-born residents, and to anyone supporting family, buying property or moving savings back to Romania. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet margin inside the exchange rate.

As of 10 October 2026, 1 GBP = lei6.3080, up 2.13% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to RON rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = lei6.3080. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer history.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. The pound's all-time high against the leu was 6.35, on 2 November 2015, just before the Brexit referendum volatility took hold.

The all-time low came at 4.13, on 1 December 2008, in the depths of the global financial crisis.

Against that history, a rate above 6 sits near the top of the last decade's range. In the weeks after the June 2016 Brexit vote the pound hovered around 5.27 to 5.32 leu, and it trades near 6.13 today, so sterling is up roughly 15.8 percent over ten years. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

How much is your money in Romanian leu?

At today's mid-market rate of lei6.3080 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee leu each one delivers today.

Romanian leu in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a leu amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in lei, such as a Bucharest flat, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Leu amountIn pounds (mid-market)
lei100£15.85
lei1,000£158.53
lei10,000£1,585.29
lei50,000£7,926.44
lei100,000£15,852.88

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Romania really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on regular family support it adds up fast over a year.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. Traditional UK banks charge an FX markup of roughly 2.53 percent, while cash-pickup services can run to 10.67 percent once margins and fees are combined. The method you choose swings the cost hugely.

Take a £1,000 transfer. Send it through a digital challenger such as Revolut, which converts at close to the interbank rate with a nominal fee, and the recipient gets around lei6,064. Send the same £1,000 through a high-street bank applying a wider spread, and the disparity can reach £45.52 in hidden costs compared with the best digital route.

That gap, on a single £1,000 transfer, is real money before you have made a habit of it. On monthly support, it is money left on the table.

One practical point for this corridor. Romania is a SEPA member but sits outside the Eurozone, so IBAN-to-IBAN bank transfers generally clear in one to two business days. Cash pick-up settles in minutes but carries the widest spreads, so compare the leu that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to RON rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to RON is not really a direct UK-versus-Romania story. It is a euro story that the leu is pinned to.

1. The pound against the euro. Romania's central bank, the BNR, runs a managed float that deliberately holds the leu steady against the euro, intervening whenever EUR/RON gets restless. So GBP to RON is effectively sterling's performance against the euro passed straight through. UK data, Bank of England decisions and UK political stability drive the day-to-day rate, not events in Bucharest.

2. The interest-rate gap. The BNR held its key rate at 6.50 percent in July 2026, its 15th hold in a row, with the deposit facility at 5.50 percent and lending at 7.50 percent. That high yield attracts foreign money to help finance Romania's deficits and prop up the leu.

3. Inflation. Romania runs structurally high inflation. Headline inflation hit 10.85 percent in May 2026, a multi-year high driven by energy, gas and fuel and the removal of electricity price caps, with core inflation at 8.5 percent. High inflation erodes the leu and forces the BNR to keep rates elevated to prevent capital flight.

4. Deficits and politics. Romania carries chronic twin deficits, a general government deficit of 7.9 percent of GDP in 2025, which push structurally down on the leu. In mid-2026 the collapse of a pro-European coalition government triggered a political crisis that briefly pushed EUR/RON to record highs, proving domestic politics can override the central bank's defences.

The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the pound against the euro. For the longer trend, watch Romanian inflation, the deficits and the politics.

06

The 70% tax trap, property rules and sending money into Romania

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Romania corridor it is where the costly mistakes hide.

The 70% ANAF tax trap. This is the single most important risk for UK residents sending money to family. From 1 July 2024, under Law 296/2023, Romania's tax authority (ANAF) can apply a 70 percent tax on income or wealth whose source cannot be justified, and it actively monitors transfers between individuals, including relatives. If your family cannot prove the legal nature of a large transfer, ANAF can classify it as unjustified income and take 70 percent of it. Tax lawyers advise documenting family transfers with a notarised donation contract and a precise transfer reference noting a non-taxable family gift. This is general information, not tax advice.

High-yield diaspora bonds. Romania actively courts diaspora capital with government bonds called Tezaur and Fidelis. The July 2026 Tezaur issue offered 6.25 percent over one year, 6.75 percent over three and 7.15 percent over five, with Fidelis up to 7.55 percent, and the income is 100 percent tax-exempt. UK-based Romanians can buy them online through the Ghiseul.ro platform without travelling to Romania.

Buying and selling property. Romania has a fully liberalised capital account, so diaspora members can freely repatriate sale proceeds in hard currency. On a sale, the state charges a transfer tax rather than income tax: if you have owned for less than three years it is 3 percent on proceeds up to 200,000 lei and 2 percent above; owned longer, it drops to 2 percent and 1 percent. For a large purchase, budget for the currency swing as well as the tax.

Carrying cash is a false economy. Beyond the theft risk, any cash above the equivalent of 10,000 euros, roughly £8,600, must be declared at Romanian customs, and undocumented cash also leaves your family exposed to the 70 percent ANAF rule. The documented bank route is both safer and, once the tax risk is counted, usually cheaper.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. In early July 2026 the pound traded tightly between about 6.08 and 6.14 leu, near the top of its historical range, helped by UK stability against a collapsing coalition government in Romania.

Forecasts for the pair barely exist, because banks model GBP/EUR and EUR/RON rather than GBP/RON directly. On the underlying leu, Erste Group expects the BNR to hold its rate flat at 6.50 percent until at least May 2027, with inflation only easing to 5.5 percent by end-2026. CFA Romania members expect the leu to keep depreciating, with EUR/RON sliding past the 5.10 to 5.17 mark over a year. If it does, and the pound holds against the euro, GBP to RON could test new highs above 6.35.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Romanian property completion, many buyers use a forward contract to lock today's rate for up to a year ahead with a small deposit, typically 10 percent. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to RON: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of lei6.3080, £1,000 is about lei6,308.00. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee leu in the table above.

The pound reached an all-time high of 6.35 leu on 2 November 2015, before the Brexit referendum volatility set in. Its all-time low was 4.13 on 1 December 2008, during the financial crisis. Today it sits near lei6.3080, close to the top of that range.

Neither officially. The National Bank of Romania runs a "managed float", intervening heavily to keep the leu stable against the euro. It has no direct relationship with the pound, so GBP to RON mostly tracks how sterling moves against the euro.

The UK sender pays no tax. In Romania, though, from 1 July 2024 the tax authority (ANAF) can apply a 70 percent tax on transfers whose source cannot be justified, including between relatives. Document a large family gift with a notarised donation contract and a clear transfer reference. This is general information, not tax advice.

A bank-to-bank transfer to a Romanian IBAN through a digital specialist such as Wise or Revolut is usually cheapest and fastest, applying the real rate with a small, visible fee. High-street banks bury a margin of around 2.5 percent, and cash pick-up can cost over 10 percent. Always compare the leu that actually arrive.

No. The official currency is the Romanian leu (RON). A few large hotels or tour operators may take euros, but shops, restaurants and taxis legally require payment in lei. A multi-currency card that converts at the interbank rate is usually the cheapest way to spend on the ground.
