Most transfers from Mauritius to India land as a direct deposit into the recipient's Indian bank account, identified by the account number and the branch IFSC code. Several services can also pay straight to a UPI ID for near-instant credit, or release cash for pickup at an agent. The headline fee is only part of the picture. What really decides the cost is the margin added to the exchange rate, so always compare the rate, not just the upfront fee.
Why Mauritius to India shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of those providers currently quote transfers that start in Mauritius, so the route comes back empty even though real services exist.
Until we can pull live Mauritius rates, you're seeing providers verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote, and always confirm the rate and fee on the provider's own site before you commit.
How the money reaches India
Most transfers land as a direct deposit into the recipient's Indian bank account, identified by the account number and the branch IFSC code. Several services can also pay straight to a UPI ID for near-instant credit, or release cash for pickup at an agent on production of a reference number and photo ID.
Bank and cash methods are typically minutes to a few business days; UPI and card-funded transfers tend to be the fastest.
What sending money to India really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On any transfer, the bigger number is usually hidden inside the exchange rate, so it's worth knowing where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
Banks and counters usually add roughly 2 to 5 percent to the mid-market rate, while more competitive services sit nearer 0.6 to 2 percent. On a larger transfer this dwarfs any upfront fee.
Intermediary-bank fees
Transfers routed through the traditional SWIFT bank network can lose 10 to 30 US dollars to intermediary banks along the way. Services using local payout rails usually avoid this.
GST on the bank's charge
On the India side there's no tax simply for receiving money, but the receiving bank's own service charge carries 18 percent GST. Compare the rate that arrives, not just the fee shown.
Tax and rules on each side
Sending from Mauritius
Mauritius does not tax private individuals for sending money abroad and has no gift or inheritance tax, and it abolished foreign-exchange controls, so there's no cap on transferring funds. Carrying physical cash worth more than 500,000 rupees out of the country must be declared to customs, but that doesn't apply to bank or app transfers.
Receiving in India
Money received from close relatives is fully tax-free with no limit. Gifts from non-relatives are tax-free only up to 50,000 rupees in a financial year, above which the whole amount can be taxable for the recipient. If you're gifting rather than supporting family, keep a note of the relationship.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
Paying from a bank account or debit card is usually the cheapest way to fund a transfer.
Funding with a credit card is often treated by the card issuer as a cash advance, which can trigger a one-off fee and interest from day one with no grace period. That quietly makes a cheap-looking transfer expensive, so check how your card treats the payment before you use it.
Scams to watch on this route
The most common traps target the recipient in India. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The fake UPI "collect request"
Rule: a genuine UPI transfer never asks the receiver to enter a PIN. Any "collect request" or QR code that demands a PIN to receive money is a fraud. To get paid you never need to approve anything.
The "customs fee" message
Rule: be wary of messages claiming a gift or large sum is "stuck" in customs and needs a release payment. Legitimate transfers on this route don't work that way. Never pay to unlock money.
Urgent "relative in trouble" requests
Rule: an urgent request that appears to come from a relative may be an impersonator. When in doubt, confirm with the family member directly on a number you already know before sending anything.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the account number, IFSC code or UPI ID against details your recipient sent you in writing, and use a verified provider rather than a stranger offering a "better rate" off-platform.

Yes. SBI (Mauritius), MCB via MCB Internet Banking or in branch, and MauBank all handle transfers to India for their own account holders. For larger amounts a bank that waives transfer fees can work out cheaper than an app; for speed and convenience, a money-transfer provider is often easier. See the local options listed above.
