Why Libya to the Philippines shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Libya, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it, much of it sent home by Filipino workers in Libya.
Libya also controls foreign currency, so a citizen sends abroad at a bank, within a yearly allowance. For GCash, you need the recipient's registered mobile number. For cash, they collect with a government photo ID and the reference number. What sending money to the Philippines really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
The rate applied when your dinars are converted, usually via the US dollar on the way to the peso, matters more than the fee on a larger transfer. Compare the pesos that actually arrive, not just the upfront charge.
Libya's yearly allowance
Each citizen aged 18 or over can buy up to about US$4,000 in foreign currency a year. That ceiling, and how much of it is left, decides how much you can send more than the fee does, so plan around it.
No extra bank commission
Under the current rules, banks should not add a commission on top of a Western Union or MoneyGram transfer. If you are quoted an extra charge, ask about it before you send.
Rules on each side
Sending from Libya
Foreign-currency transfers are controlled by the Central Bank of Libya and made at a bank via Western Union or MoneyGram. Each citizen aged 18 or over can buy up to about US$4,000 in foreign currency a year. You'll need identification, and banks should not add a commission on top of the transfer. Receiving in the Philippines
Payouts are handled by operators and banks regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Personal remittances received from abroad are not treated as taxable income. The recipient can take the money to a GCash wallet, a cash-pickup counter or a bank account. Make sure the mobile number or account details are correct before you send.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
You fund the transfer at the bank in Libya, usually from your account or in cash, when you arrange it. Ask for the all-in cost up front: the exchange rate you'll actually get, and whether any charge is added, since banks should not add a commission on top of a Western Union or MoneyGram transfer. Comparing the rate rather than just the fee is where most of the saving is.
Scams to watch on this route
The most common traps target the recipient in the Philippines, where GCash fraud is common. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The fake reversal message
Rule: a forged GCash text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real GCash balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.
OTP and PIN requests
Rule: to receive money into GCash, the recipient never shares their MPIN or a one-time code. Anyone asking for one to "release" or "verify" a payment is a fraudster.
Fake support calls
Rule: nobody from GCash or the operator ever needs the MPIN or OTP to "help", "upgrade" or "reverse" a transfer. Never share it, and cash out only at a registered outlet.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the recipient's GCash number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use the official bank channel rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.
