Most money sent from Sierra Leone to Kenya arrives as M-Pesa mobile money, though cash pickup and bank deposit also work. M-Pesa is usually the fastest, often landing within minutes, because Western Union can pay straight into a Safaricom wallet. You send in person from an agent branch or partner bank in Sierra Leone, so you complete the transfer at the counter with ID. The upfront fee is only part of the cost. What really decides how many shillings arrive is the margin added to the exchange rate, so compare the amount that actually reaches the recipient, not just the fee.
Why Sierra Leone to Kenya shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Sierra Leone, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it.
Outbound transfers from Sierra Leone also go through an authorised dealer bank with ID and documents. Until we can pull live Sierra Leone rates, this page lists the operators on the corridor, and what we could verify about each, rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote, and confirm the rate, fee and limits at the branch before you commit.
How the money reaches Kenya
Most transfers into Kenya land in an M-Pesa wallet, the Safaricom mobile-money service that most Kenyans use every day. Western Union can pay straight to M-Pesa, and the money is usually spendable within minutes. Bank deposit and cash pickup are also available.
For M-Pesa, you need the recipient's Safaricom number registered in their own name. For cash, they collect with a government photo ID and the reference number. For a bank deposit, you'll need their full name, bank and account number. Western Union sends from an agent branch or partner bank in Sierra Leone, so you complete the transfer in person.
What sending money to Kenya really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
Operators usually add a percentage to the mid-market rate between the leone and the shilling. On a larger transfer this margin can outweigh the upfront fee, so judge the deal by the shillings that actually arrive, not by the counter fee.
Two floating currencies
Both the leone and the Kenyan shilling float, and the leone was redenominated in 2022, dropping three zeros. The cross-rate can move day to day, so check the rate you are actually offered before you send rather than relying on a headline figure.
Cash-network pricing
Agent cash networks avoid intermediary-bank charges but can carry a wider rate margin. Where the payout is to M-Pesa, the money lands fast, but still check the total cost rather than the counter fee alone.
Rules on each side
Sending from Sierra Leone
Cross-border transfers from Sierra Leone go through an authorised dealer bank or operator under Bank of Sierra Leone oversight. You'll need identification, and transfers require documentation for compliance, more so on a larger amount. Use a regulated operator rather than an informal money changer, and confirm the current requirements before you send.
Receiving in Kenya
Payouts are handled by operators licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya. Personal and family remittances are not taxed. Safaricom also sets per-transaction and daily limits on M-Pesa and updates them from time to time, so a very large transfer may need to go to a bank account instead of a wallet. Check the current M-Pesa limits with Safaricom or the provider before sending a large amount.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
Because you send from an agent branch or partner bank in Sierra Leone, you'll usually fund the transfer with cash in leones at the counter. If a branch offers to take a card, check first how your bank treats it. Some issuers process a money-transfer payment as a cash advance, which can add a one-off fee and interest from day one, quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive.
Scams to watch on this route
The most common traps target the recipient in Kenya, where M-Pesa fraud is well documented. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The fake reversal message
Rule: a forged M-Pesa text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real M-Pesa balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.
SIM-swap fraud
Rule: fraudsters try to move a victim's number to a new SIM, then reset the M-Pesa PIN. Keep personal details private, and act fast with Safaricom if a line suddenly loses service.
Fake staff calls
Rule: nobody from Safaricom or M-Pesa ever needs the PIN or a one-time code to "help", "upgrade" or "secure" an account. Never share it. Report scam numbers to Safaricom on 333.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the recipient's M-Pesa number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use a verified operator rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.
How most people send money from Sierra Leone to Kenya
For most people, the simplest route is Western Union paying out to an M-Pesa wallet, sent in person at a partner bank in Sierra Leone with ID. It is the only operator we can verify for sending from Sierra Leone, so this is a short list rather than a comparison. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, judge it by the shillings that actually arrive after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's details before you send.
Sierra Leone to Kenya transfers: frequently asked questions
Our live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a few other major sending countries. It doesn't yet quote transfers that start in Sierra Leone, so instead of an empty table we list the operators on the corridor and what we could verify about each. Confirm the live rate and fee with each one before you send.
Yes. Western Union can pay into a Kenyan M-Pesa wallet, and the money is usually available within minutes. You just need the recipient's Safaricom number, registered in their own name. Bank deposit and cash pickup are also options.
We couldn't evidence that MoneyGram lets you send abroad from Sierra Leone, so we've flagged it rather than presented it as verified. MoneyGram does have an agent presence in Sierra Leone, over 1,400 locations by its own count, and it pays out in Kenya. What we can't find is a sending offer from the Sierra Leone side.
MoneyGram's own site lists the countries you can send from, and Sierra Leone isn't among them, and it publishes no Sierra Leone sending page the way it does for the countries it serves. Its agent network here may still take an outbound transfer over the counter, so this is a gap in what we know rather than a verdict. Ask at a branch before you rely on it.
For an M-Pesa payout, the recipient's Safaricom number in their own name. For cash pickup, their full name as it appears on their ID plus the reference number, which they collect with a photo ID. For a bank deposit, their full name, bank and account number. You'll also need your own ID to send from Sierra Leone.
M-Pesa and cash payouts are usually available within minutes. Bank deposits take longer, from a few hours to a few business days. The agent will give an estimated delivery time before you confirm.
On the Sierra Leone side, transfers go through an authorised dealer with ID and documents, so a larger amount needs more paperwork. On the Kenya side, Safaricom sets per-transaction and daily limits on M-Pesa, so a very large amount may need to go to a bank instead. Kenya does not tax personal or family remittances.
Paying with cash at the counter avoids card charges. If a branch takes a card, check whether your bank treats it as a cash advance, which can add a fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the counter fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.
Not especially, and we'd rather say so. Outbound transfers from Sierra Leone go through authorised dealer banks, and Western Union at the counter is the one option we can verify. Many popular remittance apps treat Sierra Leone as a country you receive money in, not one you send from.
