Sending money from Saudi Arabia to Uganda
Our live price comparison can't quote Saudi-origin transfers yet, but money genuinely moves on this route every day — around 128,000 Ugandans live and work in Saudi Arabia, most of them women in domestic and service jobs, and Saudi Arabia has become the single largest source of the money Ugandans send home (about US$796 million in a recent year). What makes this corridor different from most is where the money lands: in Uganda, mobile money handles roughly 61% of all remittance inflows, so the providers below mostly pay straight into an MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money wallet, with bank deposit and cash pickup as alternatives. Rates and fees are set by each provider and must be confirmed on their own site before you send.

Most money sent from Saudi Arabia to Uganda now lands straight in a mobile money wallet — MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money — usually within minutes, because that is how the great majority of Ugandans receive remittances. A bank deposit to a Ugandan account or a cash pickup at a bank counter are the main alternatives. The headline fee is only part of the picture — what really decides the cost is the margin added to the exchange rate, so always compare the shillings that actually arrive, not just the upfront fee.
Why Saudi Arabia to Uganda shows no live prices yet
Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of those providers currently quote transfers that begin in Saudi Arabia, so the route comes back empty even though real services move hundreds of millions of dollars along it every year.
Until we can pull live Saudi rates, this page lists providers verified to serve the corridor rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote — and always confirm the rate and fee on the provider's own site before you commit.
How the money reaches Uganda
The most common option by far is a direct transfer to a mobile money wallet. Uganda is a mobile-money-first country — the Bank of Uganda reports that mobile money handles around 61% of all remittance inflows — so a provider that pays into MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) or Airtel Money can credit the recipient in minutes, and they can spend it or cash it out at any agent kiosk, even in rural areas. To send this way you usually just need the recipient's full name and their registered mobile money phone number. Bank deposits to accounts at banks such as Stanbic, Equity or Centenary are also available (you'll need the account number and the bank's SWIFT/BIC), and cash pickup is offered through Western Union and MoneyGram agents, often located inside those same banks.
Mobile money and cash pickup are usually the fastest, landing within minutes; a bank transfer can take from same day to a couple of business days depending on the receiving bank and any correspondent-bank steps.
What sending money to Uganda really costs
The headline fee is only part of the cost. On any transfer, the bigger number is usually hidden inside the exchange rate — so it's worth knowing where each slice goes before you send.
The exchange-rate margin
The gap between the real mid-market rate and the rate you're offered. Because the riyal is pegged to the US dollar while the Ugandan shilling floats freely, this margin is where most of the cost hides on the SAR-to-UGX route — on a larger transfer it usually outweighs any upfront fee, so compare the shillings that actually arrive.
The upfront transfer fee
A flat fee per transfer, which varies a lot by method: sending direct to a mobile wallet is often cheaper than cash pickup, and digital wallets like stc pay can be very low-cost. Watch for a fee that looks small but sits alongside a wide rate margin.
VAT on the fee
In Saudi Arabia, 15 percent VAT applies only to the transfer service fee, not to the money you send. It's a small amount, but it's one reason the fee can look a little higher than expected.
Tax and rules on each side
Sending from Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia charges no personal income tax and no tax on the amount you send abroad as family support or a gift. Currency controls are minimal — you can send freely through a licensed provider with a valid Iqama or national ID. Providers verify your identity and may ask about the source of funds for large transfers, in line with Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) rules; cash of more than SAR 60,000 carried across the border must be declared.
Receiving in Uganda
Uganda does not tax family remittances received from a relative working abroad — in April 2026 Parliament rejected a proposal to tax income earned abroad and sent home. Any business moving money must be licensed by the Bank of Uganda, and providers report large or unusual transactions to the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), so keep the transfer with a licensed service.
Funding your transfer without overpaying
Paying from a Saudi bank account or a mada debit card is usually the cheapest way to fund a transfer, and Saudi Arabia's SARIE instant-transfer system makes bank funding quick. Funding with a credit card is often treated by the card issuer as a cash advance, which can trigger a one-off fee and interest from day one with no grace period — quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive. Check how your card treats the payment before you use it, and have your Iqama to hand for the identity check.
Scams to watch on this route
Most traps target the recipient, and on a mobile-money corridor a few are specific to how wallets work. These rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.
The SIM-swap / wallet takeover
Rule: a scammer who hijacks the recipient's phone number can drain a mobile money wallet. Tell your recipient to use a PIN, never share it, and contact MTN or Airtel immediately if their line suddenly goes dead.
Fake "agent" or OTP calls
Rule: MTN and Airtel never phone to ask for a wallet PIN or a one-time code to "complete" an incoming transfer. Genuine remittances arrive automatically — never share a PIN or OTP with anyone.
Advance-fee "release" requests
Rule: no legitimate service asks the recipient to pay a fee to unlock money that has already been sent. Any demand to pay first to receive is a scam.
Confirm before you send
Rule: check the recipient's name and mobile money number (or account details) against what they sent you in writing, and use a licensed provider rather than a stranger offering a "better rate" off-platform.
