Sending money from Namibia to Zimbabwe

Our live price comparison can't quote Namibia-origin transfers yet. Zimbabwe is outside the Common Monetary Area, so sending there is a controlled cross-border transfer, not a same-currency payment. The one operator we can verify for sending from Namibia is Western Union, through its agent branches and partner banks. It can pay out in Zimbabwe as cash, usually in US dollars, to a mobile wallet, or to a bank account. MoneyGram has agents in Namibia and pays out in Zimbabwe, but we couldn't evidence a sending offer from the Namibia side, so we've flagged it rather than dropped it. Rates and fees are set by the operator and must be confirmed at the branch or on their own site before you send.

Most money sent from Namibia to Zimbabwe is collected as cash, usually in US dollars, since Zimbabwe runs a multi-currency system and the dollar is widely used for remittances. A mobile wallet such as EcoCash, or a bank deposit, is also an option. Cash and mobile money are usually the fastest, often within minutes. You send from an agent branch or partner bank in Namibia. Because Zimbabwe is outside the Common Monetary Area, this is a genuine cross-border transfer under exchange control, so you'll need ID and, for larger amounts, supporting documents. The upfront fee is only part of the cost, so compare the amount that actually reaches the recipient after the exchange-rate margin, not just the fee.

Key facts — Namibia to Zimbabwe

01

Why Namibia to Zimbabwe shows no live prices yet

Currency Expert's live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a handful of other major sending countries, where the providers we connect to operate. None of them currently quote transfers that start in Namibia, so the route comes back empty even though money genuinely moves on it.

Zimbabwe also sits outside Namibia's Common Monetary Area, so sending there is a controlled cross-border transfer rather than a simple same-currency payment. Until we can pull live Namibia rates, this page lists the operators on the corridor, and what we could verify about each, rather than a live price table. Treat it as a shortlist, not a quote, and confirm the rate, fee and limits at the branch before you commit.

02

How the money reaches Zimbabwe

Most transfers into Zimbabwe are collected as cash, usually in US dollars, at a payout point, since the dollar is widely used there. A mobile wallet such as EcoCash, or a bank deposit, is also available. Cash and mobile money are usually spendable within minutes.

Cash pickup — collected at an agent, usually in US dollars, with the recipient's ID and the reference number
Usually minutes
Mobile wallet — paid to the recipient's EcoCash number, then spendable or cashed out at an agent
Usually minutes
Bank deposit — recipient's name, bank and account number
Hours to a few business days

For cash, the recipient collects with a government photo ID and the reference number. For a mobile wallet, you need their EcoCash number registered in their own name. For a bank deposit, you'll need their full name, bank and account number. Western Union sends from an agent branch or partner bank in Namibia, so you complete the transfer in person.

03

What sending money to Zimbabwe really costs

The headline fee is only part of the cost. On most transfers the bigger number is hidden inside the exchange rate, so it helps to know where each slice goes before you send.

01

The exchange-rate margin

Operators usually add a percentage to the mid-market rate as your Namibian dollars are converted, often via the US dollar since the payout is frequently in dollars. On a larger transfer this margin can outweigh the upfront fee, so compare what actually arrives.

02

The rand peg

The Namibian dollar is fixed one-to-one to the South African rand, so the Namibia side of the rate is stable. Where the payout is in US dollars, the conversion is straightforward, but always check the rate you are offered.

03

Cash and mobile-network pricing

Agent cash and mobile-money networks avoid intermediary-bank charges but can carry a wider rate margin, and a payout agent or wallet may apply its own cash-out fee. Check the total cost, not just the counter fee.

04

Rules on each side

Sending from Namibia

Because Zimbabwe is outside the Common Monetary Area, sending there is subject to Bank of Namibia exchange control and goes through a licensed operator or an Authorised Dealer bank. You'll need identification, and sales of foreign exchange of N$50,000 and over must be supported by the relevant documents. Use a regulated operator rather than an informal channel, and confirm the current limits before sending a large amount.

Receiving in Zimbabwe

Payouts are handled by operators regulated by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe runs a multi-currency system, and remittances are usually paid out in US dollars. Personal and family remittances are not treated as taxable income. Mobile-money and cash payouts have their own limits, so a very large transfer may need to go to a bank account. Check the current limits with the provider before sending a large amount.

05

Funding your transfer without overpaying

Because you send from an agent branch or partner bank in Namibia, you'll usually fund the transfer with cash or from your account at the counter. If you pay by card, check first how your bank treats it. Some issuers process a money-transfer payment as a cash advance, which can add a one-off fee and interest from day one, quietly making a cheap-looking transfer expensive.

06

Scams to watch on this route

The most common traps target the recipient in Zimbabwe, where mobile-money fraud is common. These few rules are worth passing on to whoever you're sending to.

The fake reversal message

✓

Rule: a forged EcoCash text can claim money was "sent by mistake", followed by a call pressuring the receiver to send it back. Trust only the real wallet balance, never an SMS on its own, and never refund a stranger.

PIN and OTP requests

✓

Rule: to receive money into an EcoCash wallet, the recipient never enters a PIN or shares a one-time code. Anyone asking for a PIN or code to "release" a payment is a fraudster.

Fake agent or staff calls

✓

Rule: nobody from the mobile network or the operator ever needs the wallet PIN to "help", "upgrade" or "reverse" a transfer. Never share it, and cash out only at a registered agent.

Confirm before you send

✓

Rule: check the recipient's wallet number or account details against something they sent you in writing, and use a verified operator rather than a stranger offering a better rate off-platform.

07

How most people send money from Namibia to Zimbabwe

Takeaway

For most people, the simplest route is Western Union paying out as US-dollar cash, or to an EcoCash wallet, sent in person at a Namibia agent branch or partner bank. It is the only operator we can verify for sending from Namibia, so this is a short list rather than a comparison. Because we can't show a live quote here yet, judge it by the amount that actually arrives after the rate margin, and confirm the recipient's details before you send.

08

Namibia to Zimbabwe transfers: frequently asked questions

Our live comparison engine prices transfers that start in the UK and a few other major sending countries. It doesn't yet quote transfers that start in Namibia, so instead of an empty table we list the operators on the corridor and what we could verify about each. Confirm the live rate, fee and limits with each one before you send.

Usually US dollars. Zimbabwe runs a multi-currency system, and remittances are commonly paid out in US dollars, which the recipient can collect as cash. A mobile wallet such as EcoCash, or a bank deposit, is also an option. The ZiG is Zimbabwe's local currency unit.

We couldn't evidence that MoneyGram lets you send abroad from Namibia, so we've flagged it rather than presented it as verified. MoneyGram does have an agent presence in Namibia, around 90 locations by its own count, and it pays out in Zimbabwe. What we can't find is a sending offer from the Namibia side.

MoneyGram's own site lists the countries you can send from, and Namibia isn't among them, and it publishes no Namibia sending page the way it does for the countries it serves. Its agent network here may still take an outbound transfer over the counter, so this is a gap in what we know rather than a verdict. Ask at a branch before you rely on it.

For cash pickup, the recipient's full name as it appears on their ID plus the reference number, which they collect with a photo ID. For a mobile wallet, their EcoCash number. For a bank deposit, their full name, bank and account number. You'll also need your own ID to send from Namibia.

Cash and mobile-money payouts are usually available within minutes. Bank deposits take longer, from a few hours to a few business days. The agent will give an estimated delivery time before you confirm.

Because Zimbabwe is outside the Common Monetary Area, the transfer is subject to Bank of Namibia exchange control, and sales of foreign exchange of N$50,000 and over need supporting documents. On the Zimbabwe side, cash and mobile-money payouts have their own limits, so a very large amount may need to go to a bank. Zimbabwe does not treat personal or family remittances as taxable income.

Paying with cash or from your account at the counter avoids card charges. If you pay by card, check whether your bank treats it as a cash advance, which can add a fee and interest from day one. And always compare the exchange-rate margin, not just the counter fee, since the margin is where most of the cost hides.

It's served, but thinly, and we'd rather say so. Because Zimbabwe is outside the Common Monetary Area, transfers run through a licensed operator or Authorised Dealer bank, and Western Union through its agent branches is the one option we can verify. Zimbabwe receives the money as US-dollar cash, a mobile wallet or a bank deposit.
