SBI UK Review Verdict

Our verdict

SBI UK is the UK money transfer service of State Bank of India (UK) Limited, a fully licensed British bank built around the Indian community. Its focus is sending pounds to India, with Nepal also on preferential terms.

The appeal is safety and price for its own customers. We found a small rate margin, a genuinely free transfer if you bank with SBI and keep £500 in your account, and the deposit protection that comes with a real UK bank.

The catch is who actually gets that deal. If you are not an SBI customer, you pay £20 and must visit a branch, because non-customers cannot send online, so a specialist app will usually suit you better.

Best for

  • SBI UK account holders sending pounds to India or Nepal
  • People who want a transfer run by a regulated UK bank
  • Customers who like a branch counter and phone support

Look elsewhere if

  • You are not an SBI customer and want to send online
  • You want instant payout to a wallet or UPI rather than a bank
  • You send to countries beyond India and Nepal

How Much Does SBI UK Cost?

Free for its customers, pricey for everyone else

The fee depends entirely on your relationship with the bank. We found three tiers, and the gap between them is wide, so it pays to know which one you fall into.

If you hold an SBI UK account and keep at least £500 as your monthly average balance, the transfer fee is £0. Drop below that balance and a standard account still only pays £5 per send.

Non-customers are treated very differently. You pay £20, by debit card in a branch, because non-account-holders cannot remit online at all. Funding by cash adds a further £3 per £1,000 handled.

A small, honest rate margin

This is the better part of the deal. We compared SBI UK's published rate against the mid-market and found a margin of well under half a percent on the day we checked, which is sharp for a high-street bank.

Helpfully, SBI UK shows its live India rate on its homepage before you log in, so you can price a transfer without being a customer. One current promotion is a prize draw, not a discount, so the rate and fee do not change while it runs.

03

Worked Example: Sending £1,000 to India

This uses SBI UK's live rate on 29 June 2026 against a mid-market rate near 124.66. Rates move daily, so treat it as a snapshot and check the live figure before you send.

Who you are Rate Fee Recipient gets
SBI UK account holder (£500 balance) 124.20 £0 124,200 INR
SBI UK non-customer (branch) 124.20 £20 121,716 INR
Wise ~124.66 (mid) ~£7.30 ~123,760 INR
Money2India (ICICI UK) 124.41 £0 promo 124,410 INR

Read it like this. As an eligible SBI customer you pair a zero fee with a tight rate, so you beat a mid-market app like Wise and run close to a zero-fee rival.

As a non-customer the same transfer is the worst on the table, because the £20 branch fee wipes out the rate. The lesson is simple: SBI UK is a strong deal for its own account holders and a weak one for everybody else.

Costs to watch

  • Non-customers pay £20 and must use a branch
  • The £0 fee needs a £500 monthly average balance
  • Cash funding adds £3 per £1,000
04

Where and How Can You Send Money?

India first, Nepal second

This is a focused service, not a global one. We found SBI UK offers its preferential rate only to India in Indian rupees and to Nepal in Nepalese rupees, with other countries sent by ordinary SWIFT transfer at a flat £25.

Payout goes to an Indian bank account. Your recipient is credited by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS to any bank, so you need their account number and IFSC code, and there is no cash pickup or UPI option.

If India is your route, it is worth seeing how the wider market prices it first. Compare the field on the UK to India money transfer route before you commit.

Speed and access

Method Speed
Credit to an Indian bank (IMPS/NEFT) Advertised within about 2 hours
Slower banks or off-hours Up to 24 hours
Nepal payout About 2 to 3 days

SBI UK advertises payout within about two hours to India during banking hours. Account holders send through internet banking or the YONO SBI UK app, while non-customers can only transact at one of the 11 UK branches.

05

Who Is SBI UK Best For?

SBI UK account holders sending to India

This is the core case. If you already bank with SBI and keep £500 in your account, you get a free transfer, a sharp rate and the backing of a UK bank, which is hard for an app to match on price.

You also keep everything under one regulated roof.

People who want a bank, not an app

A natural fit. If you would rather a licensed UK bank held your money than a payments start-up, SBI UK gives you that, with branches and a 24-hour phone line for support.

You trade some digital polish for that reassurance.

Non-customers who want to send online

Less ideal. You cannot remit online without an account, the branch fee is £20, and the app draws complaints, so for a quick one-off send a specialist will serve you better.

If that describes you, price a dedicated transfer app before walking into a branch.

When another provider fits better

  • You want to send online without opening an account
  • You need instant wallet or UPI payout
  • You send to destinations beyond India and Nepal
06

SBI UK Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Free transfers for eligible account holders
  • A tight exchange-rate margin for a bank
  • Run by a fully licensed UK bank with FSCS deposit protection
  • Shows its live India rate before you log in
  • Branches and a 24-hour phone line for support

Cons

  • Non-customers pay £20 and must use a branch
  • No online sending without an account
  • No cash pickup, wallet or UPI payout
  • Weak Trustpilot score and app complaints
  • Only India and Nepal get the preferential rate
07

Is SBI UK Safe?

Who runs it

We checked the FCA Register. State Bank of India (UK) Limited is an authorised UK bank under firm reference number 757156, regulated by both the FCA and the PRA.

It is the ring-fenced British subsidiary of State Bank of India, the country's largest public-sector bank, and has traded as a UK retail bank since 2018 from its Harrow head office and 11 branches.

How your money is protected

This is the real differentiator. Because SBI UK is a bank and not a payments firm, your deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, the same guarantee you get on any UK savings account.

There is one limit worth understanding. That protection covers money sitting in your account, not money in transit during a transfer, which travels through the banking network like any other payment.

Checks and security

Expect standard bank onboarding. We found SBI UK verifies you with government ID and proof of address, even as a non-customer, and larger transfers can trigger proof-of-funds questions.

The YONO app uses device binding and encryption, and the bank runs a daily transfer limit of £25,000 online. Those controls are routine, so keep your documents handy for a bigger send.

08

Using SBI UK: App, Funding and Support

Getting started. Account holders register for internet banking or the YONO SBI UK app, then add an Indian beneficiary by account number and IFSC code. Non-customers must instead visit a branch with ID to send.

Paying. Account holders fund a transfer by direct debit from their cleared SBI UK balance, while non-customers pay by debit card at the counter. The live rate shows before you confirm, and limits run to £25,000 a day online.

Support. The bank runs a 24-hour phone line on 0800 532 532, plus 11 branches where staff cover Hindi and other Indian languages. That branch network helps when you are fixing a beneficiary detail in person.

09

SBI UK Customer Reviews and Reputation

We read the reviews rather than only the scores, and the picture is mixed, with branch service praised but the digital side criticised.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot 2.8/5 ~22 Jun 2026
YONO SBI UK (iOS) 3.5/5 ~580 Jun 2026

What people praise: helpful, personal service at the branch counter, and the reassurance of dealing with a regulated UK bank rather than an app.

What goes wrong: the common complaints are login and portal problems, locked accounts, slow email replies and app session timeouts. The Trustpilot base is small, so weigh each review on its merits.

10

How Does SBI UK Compare?

On this corridor the real test is the rupees received, and you can see the wider field in our money transfer comparison.

Two natural rivals price differently. Our Money2India review covers ICICI Bank UK's India service, the closest bank-run alternative, while our Wise review looks at the transparent mid-market app that non-customers can use online in minutes. Our Aspora review covers another India-focused app worth comparing.

Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you send. Then check SBI UK's quote against what those rivals deliver on the same £1,000.

11

Final Verdict: Is SBI UK Worth It?

SBI UK is a strong way to send money to India if you already bank there. The free transfer for eligible customers, the tight rate and the safety of a licensed UK bank are a strong, low-cost combination.

For its own account holders it earns a solid score, helped by FSCS deposit protection and a branch network most apps cannot offer. The running cost to India is hard to beat at that tier.

What holds it back is everyone else. Non-customers pay £20, cannot send online and meet a weak digital reputation, so this is a 3.5 out of 5 that rewards loyalty and frustrates one-off senders. Compare your quote before each transfer.
