Santander UK Review Verdict

Our verdict

Santander is one of the UK's biggest banks, and for sending money abroad it is a convenience choice, though it hides one feature worth knowing about.

An international payment sits inside the banking app you already use, and your money is FSCS-protected up to £120,000. That safety and simplicity is the everyday reason to pick it.

For euro and dollar payments, Santander's One Pay FX service is genuinely better than most banks. It is fee-free for current-account customers and shows the exact amount your recipient will get before you send.

The catch is everywhere else. For India and most other countries you fall back to a standard transfer with a £25 fee and a margin of roughly 2.5% to 4% baked into the rate, where a specialist like Wise usually wins.

Best for

  • Existing Santander customers sending euros or dollars via One Pay FX
  • People who value FSCS cover and one familiar app over the lowest price
  • Small transfers where convenience matters more than a few pounds

Look elsewhere if

  • You send money to India, Pakistan or beyond, where the £25 fee and margin bite
  • You want cash pickup or a mobile-wallet payout for family overseas
  • You send large amounts regularly

How Much Does Santander Cost To Send Money Abroad?

Santander has two routes abroad, and the cost depends on which one your payment qualifies for. This is the key thing you need to understand before you send.

One Pay FX, the good route

We looked at One Pay FX first, because it is Santander's standout feature. For a current-account holder it is fee-free, sends to euros, US dollars and Polish zloty, and lands the same or next day.

Better still, it shows you the exact amount your recipient will get before you confirm, with no surprise deductions in transit. The rate still carries a margin, around 1.5% to 2.5%, but it is tighter and clearer than a standard bank transfer.

The standard route, and its £25 fee

For India and most other destinations, One Pay FX does not apply, so your payment goes the standard way. That costs a flat £25 fee, whether you send in the app, online, by phone or in branch.

On top of the fee sits the exchange rate margin, roughly 2.5% to 4% above the mid-market rate, the real rate you see on Google. That margin is invisible on your statement, so this route can look simple while quietly costing you the most.

Sending £1,000 abroad with Santander

These figures are illustrative, dated 2 July 2026, using mid-market rates of 1.1632 for euros and 126.11 for rupees. Rates move daily, so check Santander's live quote before you commit.

Route Fee Rate applied Your recipient gets
£1,000 to euros (One Pay FX, ~2% margin) £0 ~1.1399 ~€1,140
£1,000 to India (standard SWIFT, ~3.5% margin) £25 ~121.70 ~₹118,650

We priced the same £1,000 against Wise. On the euro route Wise uses the mid-market rate with a fee near £4.50, so your recipient gets closer to €1,158, roughly £16 more even than One Pay FX.

To India the gap is much wider, well over £50 in your recipient's pocket once the £25 fee and margin are counted.

Costs to watch

  • The £25 fee on any standard, non-euro transfer such as India
  • The 2.5% to 4% margin on standard transfers, which is easy to miss
  • Correspondent-bank charges on SWIFT that reduce what arrives, often £10 to £15 to India
  • Using your Santander debit card abroad, which carries a 2.95% fee unless you hold an Edge account

Where Can You Send Money With Santander?

Currencies and coverage

We confirmed Santander sends to bank accounts in more than 150 countries by standard transfer, with One Pay FX limited to the eurozone, the US and Poland, so you can pay most banks abroad, including popular routes like sending money to India.

Payments go bank-to-bank only. There is no cash pickup, no mobile-wallet payout and no home delivery, so this is not the tool for sending family cash to collect at an agent or receive on a wallet.

Speed and limits

One Pay FX (EUR, USD, PLN) Same or next working day
Euro SEPA payment Usually 1 to 2 working days
Other currencies (SWIFT) Typically 1 to 5 business days
Mobile app and online banking Up to £25,000 per transfer, £100,000 a day
Above the online limit Branch visit, or CHAPS by phone with no upper limit

Who Is Santander Best For?

Customers sending euros or dollars

The strongest case for Santander is One Pay FX. If you are paying a euro or dollar account, you get a fee-free transfer and a guaranteed recipient amount, which puts it ahead of most high-street banks on those routes.

Small, one-off transfers

If you are sending a modest amount once, the convenience of your own banking app can be worth a little extra. The larger the sum, or the further from a One Pay FX currency, the more the fee and margin cost you.

Spending abroad on the card

Santander's standard debit card charges 2.95% on non-sterling spending, but its Edge range and Private account waive foreign fees entirely on purchases and cash withdrawals. If you travel, an Edge account is the part of Santander worth having.

When another provider fits better

  • You send to India, Pakistan or the Philippines, off the One Pay FX list
  • You need your recipient to collect cash or receive to a wallet
  • You send larger amounts, where the margin dwarfs any fee
05

Santander Pros and Cons

Pros

  • FSCS protection up to £120,000 on your money
  • One Pay FX sends euros and dollars fee-free, with a guaranteed amount
  • £0 fee on euro SEPA payments too
  • Edge accounts waive foreign debit-card fees for travellers

Cons

  • £25 fee on standard transfers to India and most non-euro routes
  • A 2.5% to 4% margin baked into the standard exchange rate
  • One Pay FX covers only euros, dollars and zloty
  • No cash pickup or mobile-wallet payout

Is Santander Safe?

How Santander protects your money

We checked Santander against the FCA Register. The service is provided by Santander UK plc, a UK ring-fenced bank owned by Spain's Banco Santander, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and PRA under FRN 106054.

Because it is a UK bank, your deposits are protected by the FSCS. That limit rose to £120,000 per person on 1 December 2025, up from the long-standing £85,000, which is a genuine advantage over the e-money firms that use safeguarding instead.

Santander UK sits behind a ring-fence from its Spanish parent, and in 2026 it completed its acquisition of TSB, so it is expanding in the UK rather than leaving.

Account security and fraud protection

You approve international payments in-app with biometrics or a one-time code, and Santander uses Confirmation of Payee to check a UK payee's name before you send. Larger or unusual payments can trigger a fraud hold, so build in time before a deadline.

07

Using Santander: App, Online Banking and Support

Setting up a payment. You add the recipient's account and international details, such as their IBAN or account number and the bank's BIC or SWIFT code, in the app or online banking, then approve it with your security.

One Pay FX. For euros, dollars or zloty, you can use the One Pay FX flow to see the guaranteed recipient amount up front, which is the clearest experience Santander offers.

Customer support. Support is by phone, in branch, in-app messaging and the Sandi chatbot. The common frustration you should plan around is fraud-protection holds, which can block a payment and take time to clear.

08

Santander Customer Reviews and Reputation

We read past the headline score, because the picture splits between the app and the service when things go wrong.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot ~2.1/5, "Poor" ~10,000 2026
Mobile app Well rated for everyday banking app stores 2026

What people praise: a capable app and the reassurance of a big UK bank, with One Pay FX singled out for euro and dollar transfers.

What goes wrong: blocked transfers and fraud holds that lock accounts, and slow help untangling them, which is the theme behind that low Trustpilot score.

09

How Does Santander Compare?

For sending money abroad, Santander is stronger than most banks on euros and dollars but ordinary elsewhere, in our money transfer comparison. The £25 fee and margin are what cost you on routes like India.

On a straight transfer Wise usually beats it, even against One Pay FX, using the mid-market rate with one clear fee. Because Santander is absorbing TSB, that review is worth a look if you bank there, and HSBC is a similar big-bank option to weigh up. The rest of the high street charges much the same, so our Halifax, RBS and Nationwide reviews are worth weighing too.

Final Verdict: Is Santander Worth It For International Transfers?

Santander is a good bank option if you are sending euros or dollars, because One Pay FX is fee-free and shows your recipient's exact amount up front.

For India, the wider world, or larger sums, the £25 fee and the 2.5% to 4% margin make it an expensive way to send money, and a specialist will get more to your recipient. We rate it 2 out of 5 for transfers.

The safety is real. Your money is FSCS-protected up to £120,000, and with the TSB deal done, Santander is growing in the UK rather than pulling back.
