GBP/SEK rate history
Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
One pound is worth about kr12.949 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.
Pound to Swedish krona is the rate British buyers of summer cottages, parents helping a student in Uppsala or Lund, and cross-border workers all watch. Sweden kept its own currency, so every UK payment is a pounds-to-kronor exchange. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still keep a quiet 2 to 4 percent margin inside the exchange rate.
As of 25 August 2026, 1 GBP = kr12.949, up 0.38% on the week.
Is this a good GBP to SEK rate right now?
Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = kr12.949. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer history.
Here is the context most rate pages skip. The pound's highest level on record against the krona was around kr14.16, a figure reported by market-data providers whose exact date is not reliably recorded, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a precise moment. The pair's historic low came in 2013, when the UK lost its top-tier AAA credit rating for the first time since 1978.
More usefully for a decision today, the pound's recent floor was near kr12.12, in February 2026, before it climbed back through the spring.
Against the longer trend, sterling has strengthened. In July 2016, in the turmoil straight after the Brexit vote, a pound bought about 11.32 kronor. Today it buys close to 13. That is a rise of roughly 14 percent over the decade, driven partly by the Riksbank's long spell of ultra-loose policy and Sweden's exposure to the global manufacturing cycle. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

What sending money to Sweden really costs
This is where real money is won or lost, and on a property deposit or regular support it adds up fast.
Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. A digital specialist that uses the real mid-market rate loses you very little, often well under half a percent, while a high-street bank can bury a margin of 2 to 4 percent in a transfer that looks "free" at the counter.
Take a £1,000 transfer. Send it through a mid-market specialist such as Wise or Revolut, which use the real rate with a small, visible fee, and the recipient gets close to kr12,860. Send the same £1,000 through a high-street bank applying a wide margin, and the recipient can receive as little as kr12,350.
That gap is about 510 kronor, roughly £40, on a single £1,000 transfer. On a property-sized sum the same percentage runs into thousands, so it is worth getting right.
One practical point for this corridor. Sweden is almost cashless, so cash pick-up is neither needed nor useful. A bank-to-bank transfer straight to a Swedish IBAN is the cheapest and fastest route, and the money is instantly usable through Swish once it lands. Compare the kronor that actually arrive, every time.
When you are ready to move money, not just check the rate, our send money to Sweden guide compares the same live providers with the payout methods, IBAN details and delivery speeds that matter for a real transfer.
What moves the GBP to SEK rate
The single most useful thing to understand is that the krona is a "high-beta" currency. It rides the mood of global markets more than any UK-versus-Sweden story.
1. Global risk sentiment. Sweden is a small, open economy that lives on industrial exports, so the krona strengthens when the world economy is booming and stock markets are rising, and weakens sharply when investors turn cautious and run for safe havens like the dollar. Much of the day-to-day move in GBP to SEK is simply this "risk-on, risk-off" swing, with the euro-dollar cross pulling the krona along.
2. The Riksbank versus the Bank of England. The gap between the two central banks' interest rates is the biggest structural driver. Swedish households borrow mostly on variable-rate mortgages, so rate rises bite almost instantly and the Riksbank cannot hold rates high for long. Through late 2025 it cut faster than most, and when the Riksbank eases while the Bank of England holds, the pound tends to gain on the krona.
3. Inflation. The Riksbank targets 2 percent inflation on its CPIF measure. When Swedish inflation sits at or below target it has room to cut further, which can soften the krona. If UK inflation stays stickier, that policy gap widens in sterling's favour.
4. Trade and the export cycle. Sweden runs a current-account surplus built on machinery, vehicles, timber and pharmaceuticals. When global demand for those goods falters, export revenue drops and the krona weakens, which is part of why it is so tied to the health of European manufacturing.
The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the global risk mood and the two central banks, not just UK headlines.
Cashless Sweden, the gift-tax rule, property and IBANs
This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Sweden corridor it is where the practical detail hides.
A nearly cashless country. Sweden runs on cards and the Swish mobile app, so money almost always lands straight in a Swedish bank account rather than as cash. International senders cannot pay into Swish from abroad, but once funds reach the recipient's account they are instantly usable through it. For UK senders this means one thing: get the bank details right and compare on the kronor delivered.
No gift or inheritance tax. Sweden abolished both in 2004 and 2005. If a UK parent sends a large sum to a child in Sweden to help buy a home, the recipient pays no Swedish gift tax and does not declare it as income. The sender still follows UK rules, but on the Swedish side an ordinary family gift arrives clean.
Expect a bank check on big sums. No tax does not mean no questions. Swedish banks run strict anti-money-laundering checks, so a sudden large transfer, say a property deposit, will often be held until the recipient shows a deed of gift (Gåvobrev) and proof of where the money came from. Prepare that paperwork before you send.
The IBAN, and why SEPA does not make it cheap. Sweden uses the IBAN: a Swedish account number starts with "SE" and is 24 characters long, and it is usually the only detail you need. Sweden sits in the SEPA area but kept the krona, and SEPA only carries euros. So a pounds-to-kronor transfer is a real currency exchange where the provider's rate margin is the cost, not a flat euro payment. There are no capital controls, so bringing money back from Sweden later is straightforward.
Should you send now or wait?
Here is the factual picture, not advice. The pound climbed from about 12.12 kronor in February 2026 to the high 12.80s and low 12.90s by July, so sterling is near the stronger end of its recent range. Over the previous three months the pair moved between roughly 12.35 and 12.99.
Published forecasts pull in wildly different directions, which is itself the message. On the bearish side for sterling, aggregated bank research collected by ExchangeRates.org.uk points to a softer pound, around 12.43 by late 2026 and near 12.11 in early 2027. On the bullish side, technical models such as CoinCodex see the pair climbing toward 14.32 by the end of 2026 and higher still in 2027.
That spread, from about 12.10 to over 15, tells you how little weight to put on any single number. Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only.
For a large payment on a known date, such as a Swedish property completion, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate for months ahead for a deposit. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.
GBP to SEK: frequently asked questions
At today's mid-market rate of kr12.949, £1,000 is about kr12,949.11. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee kronor in the table above.
No. Sweden is in the EU but kept its own currency, the krona (SEK, written kr). A transfer from the UK is therefore a pounds-to-kronor exchange. Sweden uses the European IBAN and sits in SEPA, but SEPA only moves euros, so the cross-border leg is a currency exchange where the provider's rate margin is the real cost, not a flat euro payment.
Over the decade, yes: a pound bought about 11.32 kronor just after the 2016 Brexit vote and buys close to 13 today. In the short term the krona can rally hard during periods of global growth and Riksbank rate rises. Most forecasts disagree sharply on where it goes next, so treat any single projection as context, not a prediction.
No. Sweden abolished its gift and inheritance taxes in 2004 and 2005, so someone in Sweden receiving money from the UK pays no Swedish gift tax and does not declare it as income. They may still need to prove the source of the funds to their Swedish bank under anti-money-laundering rules. This is general information, not tax advice.
Almost always a bank-to-bank transfer to a Swedish IBAN through a mid-market specialist rather than your bank. On a large transfer the bank's mark-up on the rate, often 2 to 4 percent, matters far more than any fee because it is a slice of the whole amount. On a property-sized sum that gap can run to thousands. Always compare the kronor that actually arrive.
Yes. A Swedish IBAN starts with "SE" and is 24 characters long, and it is usually the only account detail you need, with the bank's SWIFT/BIC code used for the international step. Sweden is nearly cashless, so the money lands in a bank account and is instantly usable through the Swish app. Remember the krona is Sweden's own currency, not the euro.
