Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about Rp24135.03 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Indonesian rupiah is watched by Britons funding a life in Bali or Jakarta, families supporting relatives, and buyers eyeing villas and land. With the pound near its highest level ever against the rupiah, the temptation is to send at once. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank can advertise a "free" transfer and still bury a 3 to 5 percent margin inside the exchange rate.

As of 24 August 2026, 1 GBP = Rp24135.03, little changed on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to IDR rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = Rp24135.03. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer history.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. The pound's all-time high against the rupiah was about Rp24,301, an intraday spike on 9 June 2026, when the rupiah was under heavy pressure from a strong US dollar and global risk aversion. That is roughly where the pair still trades today.

The multi-year low came at Rp15,802, on 11 October 2016, in the depths of sterling's slide after the Brexit vote, while Indonesia was drawing in strong foreign investment.

Against that history, the pound is at the very top of its range. A pound bought about Rp17,366 ten years ago and around Rp24135.03 today, so sterling has appreciated close to 40 percent over the decade and buys roughly 53 percent more rupiah than at that 2016 low. For sending money to Indonesia the timing is historically strong. For bringing rupiah back to Britain it is poor.

How much is your money in Indonesian rupiah?

At today's mid-market rate of Rp24135.03 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee rupiah each one delivers today.

Indonesian rupiah in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a rupiah amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in rupiah, such as a Bali villa lease, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Rupiah amountIn pounds (mid-market)
Rp100,000£4.14
Rp1,000,000£41.43
Rp10,000,000£414.34

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Indonesia really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on a property deposit or regular family support it adds up fast.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. The global average cost of a remittance is around 7.45 percent, and even digital channels average close to 5 percent, but the UK's fintech market lets you do far better. A mid-market specialist prices off the real rate with a small, upfront fee.

Take a £1,000 transfer. Through a mid-market specialist such as Wise, charging roughly a 0.8 percent fee and using the real rate, the recipient gets close to Rp24,087,000. A high-street bank that quietly embeds a 3 to 5 percent margin in a weaker rate lands the recipient nearer Rp23,200,000.

That gap is about Rp887,000, roughly £37, on a single £1,000 transfer, before you have made a habit of it. On monthly support or a large property payment, that is real money left on the table.

One practical point for this corridor. Direct bank-to-bank over Indonesia's BI-FAST rail, or a payout to a GoPay, OVO or DANA e-wallet, is usually the cheapest and fastest route, with money often landing in minutes. Compare the rupiah that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to IDR rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to IDR is not really a direct UK-versus-Indonesia story. It is a US dollar story that the rupiah rides along with. The pair is effectively GBP/USD multiplied by USD/IDR.

1. The US dollar and capital flight. The rupiah is traded mostly against the dollar, so a strong dollar drains capital from Indonesian bond markets and weakens the rupiah, pushing GBP to IDR up even with nothing changing in Britain. In mid-2026 the rupiah slid toward Rp18,000 against the dollar, which is the foundational reason this pair sits above 24,000.

2. Central-bank divergence. The Bank of England held its base rate at 3.75 percent in June 2026, while Bank Indonesia was forced to hike to 5.75 percent to defend the currency against outflows. That higher Indonesian yield would normally attract carry-trade money, but global risk aversion has muted its pull.

3. Inflation. UK inflation sat near 2.8 percent in mid-2026, with Indonesia's at about 3.08 percent, still inside Bank Indonesia's 2.5 percent plus or minus one point target. Broadly balanced, so this driver is quiet for now.

4. Geopolitics and commodities. Middle East tensions and energy-price shocks hit Indonesia's import bill and feed UK inflation expectations, while the rupiah's fortunes also swing with coal and palm-oil prices. Because the rupiah is a managed float, Bank Indonesia intervenes routinely to smooth sharp moves, acting as a structural floor under the currency.

The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the US dollar and global risk mood, not just UK headlines. Bank Indonesia's interventions are the reason the pair has not climbed even higher.

06

Bali property, the freehold trap and Indonesia's currency controls

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Indonesia corridor it is where the costly mistakes hide.

The freehold trap in Bali. Indonesian law strictly bars foreigners from holding Hak Milik, absolute freehold ownership. Britons who think they are buying freehold are often steered into risky informal "nominee" arrangements through a local citizen, which carry no legal protection. The legal routes are Hak Pakai (Right to Use, needing a valid stay permit and running up to 80 years), Hak Sewa (leasehold, typically 25 to 30 years), or a PT PMA foreign-investment company holding a right-to-build title. Understand which one you are signing before you send billions of rupiah.

The 10,000-dollar currency-control rule. From 1 July 2026, Bank Indonesia capped the purchase of foreign currency against the rupiah, without underlying documents, at USD 10,000 per month or its pound equivalent. That threshold was cut sharply from USD 25,000, itself down from USD 50,000 earlier in the year. To convert more, you must show supporting paperwork such as proof of property, education or medical costs.

How the money lands. Indonesia does not use an IBAN. You need the recipient's bank account number and bank name, and most transfers settle in minutes over BI-FAST, day or night. E-wallets like GoPay, OVO and DANA are everywhere, so your recipient may prefer the cash dropped straight into an app rather than a branch account.

Tax on the receiving end. Inbound remittances are generally not taxed for the person receiving them in Indonesia, so money sent to family lands as rupiah ready to spend. This is general information, not tax advice, so check with a qualified Indonesian adviser if a transfer is large or unusual.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. Through early July 2026 the pound traded in a highly elevated range of roughly Rp24,000 to Rp24,300. A year earlier, in July 2025, it was around Rp22,085, so sterling has gained close to 9.7 percent against the rupiah over twelve months.

Published forecasts expect the pound to hold or climb further as the rupiah stays under pressure. The Long Forecast agency models GBP/IDR ending 2026 near Rp24,267 and rising toward Rp26,202 by December 2027. PoundF's algorithmic model projects Rp25,029 by October 2026 and Rp25,780 by year-end. Those are projections, not promises.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, especially here, where a single Bank Indonesia intervention or a Middle East flare-up can swing the pair 5 to 10 percent. Treat them as context only.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Bali property completion that runs to billions of rupiah, many buyers use a forward contract to lock today's historically high rate for up to a year ahead. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to IDR: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of Rp24135.03, £1,000 is about Rp24,135,031.17. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee rupiah in the table above.

The pound reached an all-time high of about Rp24,301 on 9 June 2026, an intraday spike driven by a strong US dollar and pressure on the rupiah. It still trades near that level, close to Rp24135.03 today, at the very top of its ten-year range.

Historically, yes, if you are sending pounds to Indonesia. The pound is near its all-time high above Rp24,000, and buys roughly 53 percent more rupiah than at its 2016 low of about Rp15,802. If you are bringing rupiah back to the UK, though, the timing is poor. Forecasts are unreliable, so treat them as context, not a prediction.

Mostly the strength of the US dollar, since GBP to IDR is effectively GBP/USD multiplied by USD/IDR. Global energy prices, the gap between Bank Indonesia and other central banks, and commodity swings all feed in too. The rupiah is a managed float, so Bank Indonesia intervenes routinely to steady it.

Not as freehold. A UK citizen cannot hold Hak Milik, absolute ownership. With a valid stay permit you can hold property under Hak Pakai (Right to Use) for up to 80 years, or use a Hak Sewa leasehold or a PT PMA company structure. Avoid informal "nominee" arrangements, which offer no legal protection.

Since 1 July 2026, Bank Indonesia caps the purchase of foreign currency against the rupiah, without underlying documents, at USD 10,000 per month or the pound equivalent. To convert more, you must show supporting paperwork such as proof of property, education or medical costs. This limit was cut sharply from USD 25,000 earlier in 2026.

Usually a mid-market specialist paying straight to the recipient's bank account over BI-FAST, or into a verified GoPay, OVO or DANA e-wallet. They use the real rate with a small, visible fee, while banks can bury a 3 to 5 percent margin in a weaker rate. Always compare the rupiah that actually arrive.
