Daily mid-market reference rates. Past performance is not a guide to the future.

One pound is worth about CL$1288.15 right now on the mid-market rate, the "real" rate the banks trade at and the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Pound to Chilean peso is the rate watched by Britons supporting family in Chile, by expats paying for a home in Santiago and by anyone converting sterling before a move south. The catch this page fixes is simple. The mid-market rate is not the rate you get. A bank or a cash-pickup service can advertise a low fee and still keep a quiet margin inside the exchange rate.

As of 16 September 2026, 1 GBP = $1288.15, up 1.78% on the week.

01

Is this a good GBP to CLP rate right now?

Today's mid-market rate is 1 GBP = CL$1288.15. On its own that number means little. What matters is where it sits against the recent range and the longer trend.

Here is the context most rate pages skip. Within the recent data window the pound's high against the peso was CL$1,315.2, on 8 September 2025. The multi-year low came at CL$1,159, on 25 February 2026. So far in 2026 the pound has traded in a band between those extremes, peaking near CL$1,248.6 in March.

Step back a decade and the shift is striking. On 18 July 2016 a pound bought just CL$865.29. Near CL$1,240 today, sterling has gained roughly 43 percent against the peso over ten years, through Brexit, a copper super-cycle and the pandemic. Judge the rate against this range rather than trying to call the next move.

At today's mid-market rate of CL$1288.15 to the pound, here is what common amounts are worth.

These are mid-market figures, the benchmark, not a quote. A real provider gives you a little less once its rate and fee are applied. The live comparison table above shows the actual, after-fee pesos each one delivers today.

Chilean pesos in pounds

Working the other way, here is what a peso amount is worth in pounds at today's mid-market rate. Useful if you have been quoted a price in pesos, such as a Chilean flat, a builder's estimate or a salary figure.

Peso amountIn pounds (mid-market)
CL$10,000£7.76
CL$50,000£38.82
CL$100,000£77.63
CL$1,000,000£776.30
CL$10,000,000£7,763.04

These update with the live rate. A provider's real payout will differ slightly once its own rate and fee are applied.

04

What sending money to Chile really costs

This is where real money is won or lost, and on regular family support it adds up fast over a year.

Most of the cost hides in the exchange-rate margin, not the visible fee. The trick is to separate the upfront transfer fee from the exchange-rate markup, the quiet gap between the mid-market rate and the rate you are actually given.

Take a real £1,000 transfer to Chile. Through Wise, which uses the mid-market rate and charges a visible fee of about £8.43, the recipient gets close to CL$1,243,637. Send the same £1,000 by Western Union, whose flat fee looks cheaper at £2.49 but which builds a roughly CL$16.55-worth markup into a poorer rate, and the recipient gets about CL$1,230,386.

That gap is around 13,000 pesos, on a single £1,000 transfer, even though the headline fee looked smaller on the markup route. On monthly support, that is real money left on the table.

One practical point for this corridor. A bank deposit straight to a Chilean account by account number and RUT is usually the cheapest and clears the same or next working day. Cash pickup is fast but historically the dearest method, so compare the pesos that actually arrive, every time.

05

What moves the GBP to CLP rate

The single most useful thing to understand is that GBP to CLP is not really a direct UK-versus-Chile story. It is a US dollar story that the peso rides along with.

1. The dollar cross. Because Chile settles internationally through the US dollar, liquidity providers price GBP to CLP by multiplying GBP to USD by USD to CLP. So when investors rush to the safe-haven dollar in a crisis, the peso weakens and GBP to CLP drifts up, even with nothing changing in Britain.

2. Copper and oil. Chile is the world's biggest copper producer, and the peso tracks the copper price closely. A rebound, with copper near US$6 a pound in early 2026, supports the currency, while threats to Chile's producers pressure it. Chile also imports its oil, so the higher energy prices tied to Middle East tension in 2026 weakened the peso and stoked its inflation.

3. The central-bank gap. In June 2026 Chile's central bank, the BCCh, held its rate at 4.50 percent for a fourth meeting, while the Bank of England held at 3.75 percent. Chile's higher nominal yield gives some support to the peso, though it has to be weighed against inflation and risk.

4. Inflation. UK inflation eased to about 2.8 percent by May 2026, while Chilean inflation rose to 3.9 percent, pushed up by fuel. The BCCh is aiming to bring it back to its 3 percent target by 2027.

5. Domestic and political risk. Softer investment, cooling consumption and a weaker labour market early in 2026 kept the peso from appreciating strongly even when copper and the dollar were kind. The practical takeaway: for the day-to-day rate, watch the dollar and the copper price, not just UK headlines.

06

The RUT rule, tax and sending money into Chile

This is the part generic rate pages never cover, and for the UK to Chile corridor it is where the costly mistakes hide.

The RUT is mandatory. The single most distinctive rule for Chile is the RUT (Rol Único Tributario), the national ID-and-tax number every Chilean has. Whether you send by Wise, Western Union or a SWIFT bank transfer, you must input the recipient's RUT, an 8- or 9-digit number with a final check digit or the letter K. If it does not match the account holder's name, the local peso payment bounces. Copy it exactly as your recipient sends it in writing.

No IBAN, and the account type matters. Chile is not in Europe, so there is no IBAN and SEPA does not apply. To pay in you need the bank name, the account number, the account type (cuenta corriente, cuenta vista or the basic BancoEstado CuentaRUT) and the RUT. On a CuentaRUT the account number is simply the RUT with its check digit removed, which trips up senders who think they are two different numbers.

Limits and declarations. There is no legal cap on money entering Chile, but providers set their own. Western Union, for instance, caps transfers to Chile at around $5,000 (or the sterling equivalent) per transaction, so large sums for a property purchase need a formal SWIFT channel or a specialist FX broker. Expats buying a car or a home must obtain a RUT themselves, applying via form F4415 at the SII, with a local sponsor if they have no Chilean address.

Avoid informal channels. Unofficial networks skip the fees but leave you with no recourse if the money vanishes, and a payment gone wrong can land your family on DICOM, Chile's debt registry, which makes it hard to rent or borrow. The regulated route protects the people you are sending to.

07

Should you send now or wait?

Here is the factual picture, not advice. As of July 2026 the pound sits in the upper CL$1,200s, near CL$1,240, toward the stronger end of its recent range against the peso.

Because GBP to CLP is a cross-rate, institutional forecasts focus on the dollar-peso pair, and they disagree sharply. ING (April 2026) expects copper-market strains to weaken the peso, forecasting USD/CLP near 950 by late 2026, which would lift GBP to CLP if the pound holds against the dollar. Santander is more favourable to the peso, seeing it close the year around 890 per dollar, while MUFG (July 2026) projects 921 by the end of Q3 2026, easing to 900 by Q2 2027.

Currency forecasts are unreliable and often overtaken by events, so treat them as context only. Demand also climbs around Christmas and the September Fiestas Patrias, when volumes rise and some providers quietly widen margins, so for those dates send a few days early.

For a large payment on a known date, such as a Santiago property completion or university tuition, many people use a forward contract to lock today's rate for up to a year or more ahead. These are offered by FCA-authorised firms and are not suitable for everyone, so weigh the certainty against the cost.

08

GBP to CLP: frequently asked questions

At today's mid-market rate of CL$1288.15, £1,000 is about CL$1,288,154.52. That is the benchmark figure. A real provider applies its own rate and a fee, so the amount that actually lands is a little lower, and a bank can be lower still. Compare the after-fee pesos in the table above.

The absolute all-time high is hard to pin down across changing currency regimes, but within the recent 2025 to 2026 window the pound reached a verified peak of about CL$1,315.2 on 8 September 2025. Today it sits near CL$1288.15, within the last year's range.

Yes. Anyone receiving money in a Chilean bank account must have a RUT (Rol Único Tributario), the 8- or 9-digit national ID-and-tax number. It is mandatory whether you send by Wise, Western Union or a SWIFT wire, and without it, or with a mistyped one, the payment will bounce. Copy the RUT, including its check digit, exactly as your recipient sends it.

Generally no. An ordinary family remittance is not income tax for the person receiving it, because Chile's tax authority, the SII, taxes earned income rather than money a relative abroad sends to live on. It only becomes a tax question for genuinely large one-off gifts or inheritances, which fall under separate rules. The UK sender has already paid UK tax on their earnings. This is general information, not tax advice.

The peso moves heavily with global commodity prices. It usually weakens when copper, Chile's main export, drops, when global oil prices rise (Chile is an importer), or when a strong US dollar and high US rates pull investment out of emerging markets. Because GBP to CLP is a dollar cross, a stronger dollar tends to push the pound-peso rate up.

A bank-to-bank transfer to a Chilean account by account number and RUT through a mid-market specialist such as Wise is usually cheapest and clears within a working day. They apply the real rate with a small, visible fee, while cash pickup and legacy providers bury a markup in a poorer rate. Always compare the pesos that actually arrive.
