Deel Review Verdict

Our verdict

Deel is not a money transfer service. It is a global HR and payroll platform built to hire and pay workers abroad, through Employer of Record cover, contractor management and global payroll.

If your real job is paying overseas employees or contractors compliantly, Deel is excellent. You get local contracts, tax handling and one bulk payment run across 150-plus countries, with strong reviews to match.

The catch is the money leg. Deel adds an undisclosed FX margin, and your worker can lose more on withdrawal fees. If you just want cheap international payments, a specialist does it better.

Best for

  • Companies hiring employees abroad without a local entity
  • Businesses paying international contractors compliantly
  • Finance teams wanting payroll, HR and payments in one place

Look elsewhere if

  • You only need to send occasional international payments
  • You want a transparent, low-cost FX rate you can see upfront
  • You need a multi-currency account to receive customer revenue

How Much Does Deel Cost?

Clear platform fees, less clear FX

Deel's headline fees are transparent. We confirmed Employer of Record cover is around $599 per employee a month, contractor management about $49 per contractor, and global payroll roughly $29 per employee. Deel's basic HR tools are free up to 200 staff.

We found volume cuts the EOR price, often to $350 to $500 a seat for larger teams. Billing is in US dollars, though UK businesses can fund accounts in pounds.

So far so reasonable. The cost that is harder to see sits in the currency conversion, which is where the real watch-outs begin.

The hidden FX margin and worker fees

Here is the part to scrutinise. When Deel converts your funding into a worker's currency, it adds a margin over the mid-market rate that we found is not published, estimated at 0.5% to 1% on major pairs and up to 3% on exotic ones.

You can dodge that margin by funding an invoice in the same currency it was issued in. There is also a $5 BACS fee when you fund in pounds.

Your worker can pay too. Withdrawing from their Deel balance costs nothing by Deel Card, but $5 to $10 by international wire, or 2.5% via PayPal, which quietly trims their take-home pay.

03

Worked Example: Paying a £5,000 Contractor

This modelled example shows the full cost, not just the platform fee. Figures are dated 28 June 2026 and will vary, as Deel does not publish a fixed FX rate.

Amount
Contractor target pay (£5,000 at mid 1.25) $6,250
Plus Deel contractor fee $49
You are billed (before FX and funding fees) $6,299
Worker nets after a PayPal withdrawal ~$6,094

Say you pay a contractor the equivalent of £5,000, or $6,250 at a mid-market rate of 1.25. You are billed that plus the $49 fee, with a roughly 1% FX margin and a $5 funding fee on top when you pay in pounds.

The worker receives $6,250 into their Deel balance. If they cash out via PayPal at 2.5%, they net about $6,094 before PayPal's own conversion. A Deel Card withdrawal would cost them nothing instead.

Costs to watch

  • The FX margin is not shown until the point of payment
  • A $5 BACS fee applies when you fund in pounds
  • Tell workers to use the free Deel Card, not PayPal or SWIFT

Where and How Can You Send Money?

150-plus countries, the HR way

Deel's reach is broad. We found it offers Employer of Record cover in 150-plus countries and pays contractors across a similar spread, in well over 120 currencies, through one consolidated payment run.

It is worth being clear on what Deel is not. Unlike Wise or Airwallex, it does not give your business a multi-currency account with local details to receive customer revenue. It is an HR disbursement system, not a treasury account.

Because a lot of hiring and contracting runs to the US, it helps to see how the market prices that route. Compare the field on the UK to United States money transfer route for context.

Payout options and speed

Deel Card Instant, no withdrawal fee
International wire (SWIFT) 5 to 7 days, $5 to $10 fee
PayPal About 1 day, 2.5% fee
Crypto (USDC) About 1 day, $5 flat or 1.6%
Via Wise Deel charges nothing; Wise fees apply

Who Is Deel Best For?

Companies hiring employees abroad

This is the core case. If you want to hire someone in another country without setting up a local company, Deel's Employer of Record service handles the contract, tax and benefits, with onboarding in as little as 2 to 3 days.

You pay a premium for it, but you are buying out a large legal and compliance risk.

Businesses paying many contractors

A natural fit. If you manage a roster of international freelancers, Deel generates compliant contracts, collects tax forms and pays everyone in one run, with misclassification protection built in.

Occasional payers and the cost-conscious

Not the right tool. If you just pay a supplier or a one-off consultant, the monthly fee and FX margin make Deel overkill. A simple transfer provider will cost you far less.

When another provider fits better

  • You are paying a one-off invoice, not managing workers
  • You want the cheapest, most transparent FX rate
  • You need to receive revenue into local currency accounts

  • Funds are safeguarded, not FSCS-protected

Is Deel Safe?

Who runs it

We checked the FCA Register. Deel's UK payments run through Deel Payments UK Ltd, an authorised payment institution under firm reference number 947491. In Europe, a separate entity is regulated by the National Bank of Belgium.

Deel itself is a large, well-funded business, founded in 2019 and valued at $17.3bn in late 2025. It holds strong security credentials, including ISO 27001 and SOC 2, with encryption and multi-factor login as standard.

A lawsuit worth knowing about

You should be aware of one cloud. Since 2025, Deel has been in a high-profile legal fight with rival Rippling, which alleges corporate espionage, and a US criminal probe was reported in early 2026.

We report this neutrally. Deel denies the claims, says it is unaware of any probe, and has countersued. It is unresolved, so treat it as context rather than a verdict.

How your money is protected

Because Deel's payments arm is a payment institution, not a bank, your money is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected. Client funds must be held separately from the firm's own money.

That is the standard model for payment firms and it is robust. It just does not carry the bank-style FSCS guarantee, which matters when large payroll sums are passing through.

08

Using Deel: Onboarding, Platform and Support

Getting started. You sign up online and add your workers, then Deel runs the know-your-business and worker checks. Hiring an Employer of Record employee can complete in 2 to 3 days, faster than setting up a local entity yourself.

The platform. Day to day, you approve a single payment run and Deel pays everyone. It syncs with accounting and HR tools like Xero, QuickBooks and BambooHR, and offers an API for automation.

Support. Most users rate the onboarding and service highly. The main gripe comes from larger teams, who occasionally report slower support and payroll snags at scale, so plan ahead for big runs.

09

Deel Customer Reviews and Reputation

We read the reviews rather than just the scores, and Deel rates very well, with the criticism focused squarely on payment costs.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot 4.6-4.8/5 ~8,900 Jun 2026
G2 4.8/5 Thousands Jun 2026

What people praise: the intuitive platform, the sheer speed of onboarding an international hire, and the compliance automation that takes legal worry off their plate.

What goes wrong: contractors flag withdrawal fees, surprise SWIFT deductions and opaque FX eating into pay, while some big teams report support delays.

How Does Deel Compare?

Deel competes less with transfer apps and more with business payment platforms, so it is worth weighing against them, and you can see the wider field in our money transfer comparison.

The key rivals do payments without the HR layer. Our Wise review covers a transparent mid-market option for paying contractors who invoice you directly, while our Airwallex review looks at an enterprise platform with local accounts and cards. Two more business-payment options sit close by: our WorldFirst and Equals Money reviews.

Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you pay. For a fuller look at platforms built for companies, see our guide to international business payments.

11

Final Verdict: Is Deel Worth It?

Deel is the leading way to hire and pay people abroad without the legal headache, with broad reach, fast onboarding and excellent reviews. For that job, it is genuinely strong.

For hiring and compliance it earns 4 out of 5. The platform is polished, the country coverage is huge, and the time it saves is real.

What pulls it down is the money side. The FX margin is hidden, workers can be stung on withdrawals, and it is poor value for simple payments. If you are running global payroll, Deel is worth it. If you just need to move money, use a transfer specialist instead. Model the all-in cost first.

Deel FAQs

No. Deel is a global HR, payroll and Employer of Record platform for hiring and paying workers abroad. It moves money as part of that, but it is not designed for simple one-off transfers. For occasional international payments, a dedicated transfer provider is cheaper and simpler.

Employer of Record cover is around $599 per employee a month, contractor management about $49 per contractor, and global payroll roughly $29 per employee. On top, Deel adds an FX margin of about 0.5% to 3% that it does not publish, and workers may pay withdrawal fees.

Deel's UK payments run through Deel Payments UK Ltd, an FCA-authorised payment institution (FRN 947491). Your money is safeguarded in segregated accounts, the standard model for payment firms, though it is not FSCS-protected. Deel also holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 security certifications.

Workers receive funds into a Deel balance and choose how to withdraw. The Deel Card is instant and free, while an international wire costs $5 to $10 and PayPal charges 2.5%. To keep the most of their pay, workers should use the free Deel Card option where possible.
