Starling Bank Review Verdict
Starling is one of the best UK accounts for spending and withdrawing cash abroad. It is a fully licensed bank, it passes the Mastercard rate on card spending, and it adds no weekend markup.
Its standout trick is cash. We found genuinely free ATM withdrawals abroad with no monthly cap, where most rivals throttle you after a couple of hundred pounds. For sending money, Starling adds a 0.4% margin plus a small delivery fee, so it is fair but not the cheapest.
So Starling is a brilliant everyday and travel bank. If you wire large sums abroad regularly, a specialist may still beat its transfer rate.
Best for
- Spending and taking out cash abroad with no Starling fees
- People who want a real bank with FSCS protection, not an e-money app
- A free euro account with a European IBAN, at no monthly cost
Look elsewhere if
- You want the very cheapest transfer on a big remittance
- You receive lots of foreign currency, where a 2% fee bites
- You want to lock a rate for a future payment
How Much Does Starling Cost to Spend and Send Abroad?
Spending on the card abroad
This is where Starling is hard to beat. We checked the policy: when you pay in a foreign currency, Starling uses the Mastercard wholesale rate and adds no markup or foreign transaction fee.
It applies seven days a week, so there is no weekend surcharge. That beats Revolut, which adds a 1% markup at weekends for standard accounts when the markets are shut.
One trap is not Starling's fault. If a shop or cash machine offers to charge you in pounds, that is dynamic currency conversion at their poor rate. Always choose to pay in the local currency.
Cash withdrawals abroad
Starling is unusually generous here. We confirmed foreign ATM withdrawals are free from Starling's side, with no monthly cap and no split between EEA and the rest of the world.
The only limits are for security: up to £300 a day, across a maximum of six withdrawals. Note the cash machine's own operator may still charge its own fee, which is outside Starling's control.
Sending money abroad with Starling
For card spending Starling passes the raw rate, but on transfers it becomes the currency provider and takes a margin. We read the pricing so you know the real cost.
It adds a flat 0.4% FX margin on top of the mid-market rate, plus a delivery fee. A local or SEPA payment costs £0.30, while a SWIFT payment costs £5.50. Choose SEPA for euros where you can.
Worked Examples: £1,000 to Spain and £1,000 to India
These are sourced figures dated 27 June 2026. Rates move daily, so check the live quote in the app before you commit.
| Rate | Fee | Your recipient gets | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to a euro account in Spain (SWIFT) | 1.15861 | £4.00 margin + £5.50 | ~€1,147.60 |
| Transfer to an Indian rupee account (estimate) | ~126.89 | £4.00 margin + £5.50 | ~₹125,700 |
The euro figure uses SWIFT. Pick SEPA instead and only £0.30 comes off, so more euros land. The India row is a structural estimate, not a quoted rate, so check the app.
Costs to watch
- The 0.4% margin plus delivery fee makes Starling dearer than a transfer specialist
- A SWIFT payment can also lose £5 to £20 to intermediary banks on the way
- Money you receive in a foreign currency is converted at a 2% margin
- The £300 daily ATM cap can be tight if you need a lot of cash fast
Where Can You Send Money With Starling?
Currencies and countries
We confirmed Starling sends to 34 countries across 17 currencies, including euros, US, Australian and Canadian dollars, and Singapore dollars. It blocks sanctioned destinations such as Russia and Iran.
Unlike many app banks, Starling offers a free euro account for personal customers, with its own European IBAN, handy if you spend time in the Eurozone. A US dollar account is a business add-on.
How a transfer reaches your recipient
- Local or SEPA routing for euros and supported networks, the cheaper option
- SWIFT routing for wider global reach, with tracking but a higher fee
- Speed: SEPA is quick; SWIFT can take a few working days
Limits
| ATM withdrawals | £300 per day, max 6 withdrawals |
| Contactless | £100, adjustable down to £0 in the app |
| Euro account | Free for personal customers, European IBAN |
| International transfer cap | Set by your verification tier |
For a popular route like sending money to Spain, Starling's free euro account and SEPA option make it a tidy choice, though it is worth checking the live cost on larger sums.
Who Is Starling Bank Best For?
Everyday spending and holidays
This is Starling at its best. If you want a card that charges the proper rate abroad and free cash withdrawals, with instant alerts and a freeze button, you are very well served for travel and daily life.
For most trips you never need a separate travel card. Just keep the £300 daily cash limit in mind if you rely on notes.
Sending money to family or a home abroad
Starling is fair here, not the keenest. You send from an app you trust, at a clear 0.4% margin plus a small fee, with a free euro account if you deal in euros.
The trade is that margin. For a regular sender chasing every penny, a transfer specialist usually leaves a little more in your recipient's pocket.
Large one-off transfers
Workable, with care. Starling cannot lock a rate for a future payment the way a currency broker can, and a SWIFT payment can shed intermediary fees on the way. For a property deposit abroad, weigh a broker too.
When another provider fits better
- You want the cheapest transfer on a large remittance
- You regularly receive foreign currency and want to dodge the 2% fee
- You want to fix today's rate for a payment due later

- A 2024 FCA financial-crime fine and reports of sudden account freezes
Is Starling Bank Safe?
How your money is protected
We checked the FCA Register. Starling Bank Limited is a fully authorised UK bank, regulated by the FCA and PRA under FRN 730166, with its banking licence granted in 2016.
Because it is a bank, your eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS, the statutory safety net. That protection rose to £120,000 per person from 1 December 2025. This is stronger than the safeguarding used by e-money apps.
Security and the compliance record
The app has strong controls: instant card freeze, separate toggles for online, magstripe and ATM use, 3D Secure, biometric login and Confirmation of Payee. In 2025 it added a Scam Intelligence tool to flag dodgy marketplace sellers.
We have to be straight about the record. The FCA fined Starling about £28.9m in September 2024 over past financial-crime and sanctions-screening failures. It has since paid the fine and overhauled its controls, but, like its rivals, its automated checks can freeze ordinary accounts.
Using Starling: App, Accounts and Support
The app. You open the account, spend, send and manage everything from your phone, including international transfers. You can also open a free euro account for a European IBAN.
Fees and add-ons. The personal current account is genuinely free, with no monthly charge. Starling sells add-ons rather than premium tiers, such as the Kite account for children and a business US dollar account.
Customer support. Support is 24/7, mainly through in-app chat with phone help available. It is well rated day to day, though users caught in a fraud freeze can find resolution slow.
Starling Customer Reviews and Reputation
We read the recent reviews rather than just the headline score, and the everyday picture is strong, with a wall of awards behind it.
| Source | Score | Reviews | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.2/5, "Great" | 46,602 | July 2026 |
| App Store | 4.9/5 | Apple | Jun 2026 |
| Google Play | 4.6/5 | Android | Jun 2026 |
What people praise: the slick app, fee-free spending abroad, instant categorisation, and a long run of Best British Bank awards.
What goes wrong: sudden account closures and frozen funds, usually triggered by automated anti-fraud checks, and slow help while that is sorted.
How Does Starling Compare?
For everyday spending and travel cash, Starling is one of the strongest UK accounts, and you can weigh it against the rest in our money transfer comparison.
For transfers, Starling adds a 0.4% margin, so a specialist is usually cheaper. Our Wise review shows the mid-market route with one clear fee. If you want a multi-currency app with a tight weekday rate, our Revolut review is the natural rival, though it adds a weekend markup that Starling avoids. The other app and card options split much the same way, so our Chase UK, Monese, Currensea and Wirex reviews are worth a look.
Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you send. Businesses moving money abroad should also see international business payments.
Final Verdict: Is Starling Bank Worth It?
Starling is the one to reach for if you want a proper bank account that behaves abroad: the real rate on card spending, free cash withdrawals, and FSCS protection behind it.
For that job it is excellent, and we rate it 4.4 out of 5. We found the free, uncapped ATM access and free euro account genuinely useful, and rare among UK banks.
Just know the two trade-offs before you lean on it: that 0.4% margin means a specialist is cheaper for big transfers, and a past FCA fine plus account-freeze reports mean you should not keep your only money here.
