Monzo Review Verdict

Our verdict

Monzo is one of the best UK accounts for spending abroad. It is a fully licensed bank, it passes the Mastercard rate straight to you on card spending, and it adds no weekend markup.

For sending money abroad, Monzo plugs into Wise, so you get the real mid-market rate with a clear fee. The catch is a small 0.30% partner fee on top, so a transfer costs you a little more than using Wise directly.

So Monzo is a brilliant everyday and travel account, and a fair way to send the odd transfer. If you move money abroad often, you can shave a bit more off by going to Wise yourself.

Best for

  • Spending on the card abroad with no FX markup, any day of the week
  • People who want a real bank with FSCS protection, not an e-money app
  • The occasional international transfer sent from one familiar app

Look elsewhere if

  • You want the absolute cheapest transfer and will use Wise direct
  • You need to hold euros or dollars in the account
  • You make heavy cash withdrawals abroad on a free plan

How Much Does Monzo Cost to Spend and Send Abroad?

Spending on the card abroad

This is where Monzo shines. We checked the policy: when you pay in a foreign currency, Monzo uses the Mastercard wholesale rate and adds no markup or foreign transaction fee.

It applies seven days a week, so there is no weekend surcharge. That is a real edge over Revolut, which adds a 1% markup at weekends for standard accounts when the markets are shut.

One trap is not Monzo's fault. If a shop or cash machine abroad offers to charge you in pounds, that is dynamic currency conversion at their poor rate. Always choose to pay in the local currency.

Cash withdrawals abroad

The card is generous in Europe and stricter further afield. We pulled the current allowances so you know where the line sits.

  • In the UK and EEA: fee-free and unlimited if Monzo is your main bank or you are on a paid tier
  • Outside the EEA, Free and Extra plans: up to £200 fee-free every 30 days
  • Outside the EEA, Perks and Max plans: up to £600 fee-free every 30 days
  • Above your allowance: a flat 3% fee on the amount you take out

Sending money abroad with Monzo

Monzo does not run its own transfer rails. It partners with Wise, so your money converts at the mid-market rate, the same wholesale rate you see on Google.

The fee is shown upfront before you send. It is the standard Wise charge plus a 0.30% partner fee that Monzo keeps. On £1,000 that partner fee is about £3, so you pay a little more than going to Wise yourself.

Worked Examples: £1,000 to Euros and £1,000 to India

These are sourced figures dated 27 June 2026. Rates move daily, so check the live quote in the app before you commit.

Rate Fee Your recipient gets
Transfer to a euro account (Wise-powered) 1.1578 ~£7.27 ~€1,149.38
Transfer to an Indian rupee account (Wise-powered) 126.89 ~£8.22 ~₹125,846

Both use the mid-market rate, so the fee is the whole cost. The India fee is the Wise charge plus Monzo's 0.30% partner fee.

Costs to watch

  • The 0.30% partner fee makes Monzo dearer than Wise direct on the same transfer
  • Cash withdrawals past your allowance cost a flat 3%
  • Money you receive in a foreign currency is converted at a 1% fee, capped at £1,000
  • The account only holds pounds, so you cannot park euros to dodge a poor day
04

Where Can You Send Money With Monzo?

Currencies and countries

We confirmed the Wise link lets you send to roughly 35 to 38 currencies, including euros, dollars, rupees, Australian and Canadian dollars, and Singapore dollars.

A few destinations are settled in dollars over SWIFT rather than the local currency, which can mean a deduction at the far end. Monzo accounts only hold pounds, so you cannot keep a euro or dollar balance the way you can with Wise or Revolut.

On a busy corridor like sending money to India, the Wise rails behind Monzo are competitive, but it is worth checking the live cost before you send a large sum.

How a transfer reaches your recipient

  • Bank deposit in the recipient's local currency, handled by Wise
  • Mid-market rate on the conversion, with the fee shown before you send
  • Speed: many corridors land the same or next day, subject to local clearing

Limits

Bank transfers, incl. international £10,000 per day by default
Card payments £10,000 per day
ATM withdrawals £400 per day
Larger sums Higher limits up to £25,000 or £50,000 on request, with ID checks

Who Is Monzo Best For?

Everyday spending and holidays

This is Monzo at its best. If you want a card that charges the proper rate abroad with no weekend penalty, plus instant notifications and a freeze button, you will be very well served for travel and daily life.

For most trips you never need a separate travel card. Just watch the cash allowance if you like to carry local notes.

Sending money to family overseas

Monzo is a fair option here, not the keenest. You get Wise's mid-market rate inside an app you already use, which is convenient and honest about the fee.

The trade is that 0.30% partner fee. For a regular sender chasing every penny, going straight to Wise keeps a little more in your recipient's pocket.

Large one-off transfers

Workable, with limits. You can lift your transfer ceiling with ID checks, but Monzo cannot lock a rate for a future payment the way a currency broker can. For a property deposit abroad, a broker is usually the better tool.

When another provider fits better

  • You want the cheapest transfer and will use Wise directly
  • You need to hold or spend in euros or dollars
  • You want to fix today's rate for a payment due later
06

Monzo Pros and Cons

Pros

  • The Mastercard rate on card spending abroad, with no markup
  • No weekend FX surcharge, unlike some rivals
  • A fully licensed UK bank with FSCS deposit protection
  • Mid-market international transfers built in, powered by Wise
  • A polished app with instant alerts, card freeze and savings Pots

Cons

  • A 0.30% partner fee makes transfers dearer than Wise direct
  • Free and Extra plans only give £200 fee-free cash abroad per 30 days
  • The account holds pounds only, with no foreign-currency balances
  • A 1% fee on money you receive in a foreign currency
  • A track record of sudden account freezes and slow support during them

Is Monzo Safe?

How your money is protected

We checked the FCA Register. Monzo Bank Limited is a fully authorised UK bank, regulated by the FCA and PRA under FRN 730427, with its banking licence granted in April 2017.

Because it is a bank, your eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS, the statutory safety net. That protection rose to £120,000 per person from 1 December 2025. This is a stronger guarantee than the safeguarding used by e-money apps.

Security and the account-freeze question

The app has strong controls: instant card freeze, a toggle for magstripe use, 3D Secure online, biometric login and Confirmation of Payee on UK transfers.

We have to be straight about the weak spot. The FCA fined Monzo £21.1m in July 2025 over past anti-money-laundering failings, and its automated checks can freeze ordinary accounts. If that happens, reaching a human can be slow, which is the most common serious complaint.

08

Using Monzo: App, Tiers and Support

The app. You open the account, spend, send and manage everything from your phone. International transfers sit inside the app and may prompt you to link or create a Wise account the first time.

The tiers (2026 prices). Free is £0. Extra is £3 a month, Perks £7, and Max £17. Higher tiers lift your overseas cash allowance to £600, and Max adds worldwide travel insurance, useful if you travel a lot.

Customer support. Support is mainly in-app chat, with phone help for some issues. It is well rated day to day, but users caught in a fraud freeze report struggling to reach a person quickly.

09

Monzo Customer Reviews and Reputation

We read the recent reviews rather than just the headline score, and the everyday picture is genuinely strong.

Source Score Reviews As of
Trustpilot 4.6/5, "Excellent" 70,057 July 2026
App Store 4.9/5 Apple Jun 2026
Google Play 4.8/5 Android Jun 2026

What people praise: the slick app, instant notifications, savings Pots and the fee-free card abroad.

What goes wrong: sudden account freezes, slow chat support during a lockout, and the appeals process after an anti-fraud closure.

How Does Monzo Compare?

For everyday spending and travel, Monzo is one of the strongest UK accounts, and you can weigh it against the rest in our money transfer comparison.

For transfers, remember Monzo runs on Wise's rails plus a small fee, so our Wise review shows the cheaper way to send the same money. If you want a multi-currency app with the tightest weekday rate, our Revolut review is the natural rival, though it adds a weekend markup. Among the other app accounts our Starling, Chase UK, Monese and Currensea reviews cover the closest rivals on everyday spending.

Rates move daily, and we refresh the live figures, so run a live comparison of today's rates and fees before you send. Businesses moving money abroad should also see international business payments.

11

Final Verdict: Is Monzo Worth It?

Monzo is the one to reach for if you want a proper bank account that behaves abroad: the real rate on card spending, no weekend penalty, and FSCS protection behind it.

For that job it is excellent, and we rate it 4.3 out of 5. We found the card unbeatable for travel simplicity and the built-in Wise transfers fair and clear about the fee.

Just know the two trade-offs before you lean on it: that 0.30% partner fee means Wise direct is cheaper for transfers, and the account-freeze risk is real, so do not keep your only money here.
